Y50-70 - Magnet found inside - lid sensor?

2018-10-26, 9:12 AM

Hello,

while disassembling a y50-70 for keyboard replacement, a small magnet fell off and I didn't manage to see where it got detached from.

I suppose it is a magnet for the lid sensor but I cannot figure out where its position was...

I also did not find information on the hardware maintenance support document for this model.

Could you help me? I can post an image of the piece if necessary.

Re: Y50-70 - Magnet found inside - lid sensor?

Hi, please find attached photos of the magnet. I read that on other models it is situated in a round hinge (lock cap) that is on the left side of the lcd pane, but this is not the case of y50-70 I guess, as display hinges are much different.... What I cannot explain is that there's nothing broken and it's a very strong magnet. It's weird it just fell like this unless it was on the plastic part near/under the touchpad (as the sensor probably is on the left side of the webcam) and not near or attached to metal parts. I want to avoid reassembling all back again just to find out that hibernation/standby on closed lid won't work. I know I can try the magnet from the outside to find where the sensor is and then have a better guess of where the magnet should be on the base, but it'd still be a guess and maybe approximate and not fitting... Thanks for any help you may provide me with.

We have checked all our resources here but we can't find any magnet installed on Y50-70. Check the image below for the System Placement.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Elia3 !

I am not an owner of your model, but in reviewing images of the keyboard palm rest on the Internet I believe I may have found a location for the magnet.  The first image shows what appears to be an object similar in size to your magnet (circled in red).

The second image is from another website shows that object is missing, but there is a holder molded into the plastic which is of similar size to your magnet (circled in red).

Hi, I confirm this is the correct position of the magnet as you suggested, i.e. right lower angle of the storage disk bay on y50-70. Sleep-hibernate/wake up, work fine when lid is closed/opened.
