Y50-70 Super speed USB3 ?

2017-10-29, 12:40 PM

I have 500 Mbits cable modem which I connected to USB port via TP's Ethernet to USB3 adapter. Now the speed howers around 95 Mbits and after I connect the adapter it keeps prompting that device would run much faster had I it connected to Super speed USB3 port? - Now since theres well knownly 2 supposedly USB3 ports on the left side and one USB2 port on the right side.. so which one of the 2 left side ports are super speed USB3 and how do I activateSUPER SPEED if its not in that speed as default?

USB 2.0 "In Theory" can be run at 480 Mbps (or about 60 MB/s). Although because a lot of external factors can decrease this speed down to lower then 5MB/s in real life. Those factors will also affect USB 3.0. I suggest you use google to look for those factors.

Also, If you using Windows 8 or newer, there should be no problem in running USB 3.0. But if you're using Windows 7 I think you'll need to install a USB 3.0 driver from Intel (or so I heard, I'm using Windows 10). Also, since USB 3.0 has a lot of PIN to speed up the transfer speed, conventional USB cable may not design for USB 3.0. You should check your USB cable too.

Both of the left side usb port in Y50-70 is USB 3.0. You can check if you're really running on USB 3.0 by going to 'Control Panel' (in 'Category' view) -> 'Hardware and Sound' -> 'Devices and Printers'. There you'll see your device and click on it to check if it really connected via USB 3.0 or not.

You do not need to activated the Super speed USB 3.0, it will use USB 3.0 automatically if your device is compatible. By compatible I mean everything, from cable to driver. That is why I did not say it out and your computer only demand you to 'plug-in' to USB 3.0 port.

Also, since you're using windows 7 you'll need a USB 3.0 driver from intel website (link : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/65855/Intel-USB-3-0-eXtensible-Host-Controller-Driver) and Y50-70 is 'Intel 8 Series C220 Chipset' if you confused on which one to download. If not it will use USB 2.0 compatible mode (from what I hear anyway).

Try to check in 'Devices and Printers' and confirm that your device is connected via USB 3.0. You can see it in the 'status' when you click or hover on your device.

Sometime when you plug-in your USB device the PIN is not fully connnected yet and the windows will mistake it for USB 2.0. You should check if your device is connected to USB 3.0 after you fully connnected the device.

This picture is only example of USB 3.0 connected via USB 3.0 port and USB 2.0 port in my Y50-70 (Windows 10).

From the images you're showing. There should be no problem with USB 3.0 drivers and compatible in your Laptop. You should try restarting the computer and try to measure the speed again. It should working at USB 3.0 speed.

Also, I'm just realize that Windows 7 will not show if the device is connected to USB 3.0 or not (my bad...). And only windows 8 or newer have a mean to do so (From :https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/usbcoreblog/2012/06/27/how-to-determine-whether-a-usb-3-0-device-is-operating-at-superspeed/).
