Re: Y50-70 Windows regularly freezes when 1TB SSHD is spinning up

As soon as I get my BRAND NEW laptop back from "Repair"

I'll probably be having to purchase a new hard drive replacement for my already brand new laptop.

the thing is,

this is the second effing laptop I've sent back to them in a month with a failed hard drive,

hopefully my third computer will work..

if not, 3rd strike I'll get my money back and go somewhere else, I'm tired of dealing with this crap.

Guys, I just have received a message from my repair center. They have done repairing and will send the device back to me. I think it should be here in one week. I will let you know what they have done with it and if their job fixed the problem.

I'll be posting updates when I get my laptop back from the repair center as well. I only had mine for a couple of days.

The more I dig, the worse it looks for the Lenovo brand.  I skimmed through this thread - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Removal-Instructions-for-VisualDiscovery-Superfish-application/ta-p/2029206, and it seems that the company really isn't very responsive to the needs of their customers.

I am pretty sure this has been resolved. I'm fairly certain that new systems do NOT have that Superfish installed and for folks whose computers did have it installed, they have provided a method of removing it PLUS they give you 6 month subscription to McAffee that starts AFTER the initial 30 day.

Lenovo has many problems but for this one, I think what they did is fair. I can't explain how or why they put it on there in the first place except to add more bloatware/freeware but it backfired. Just saying, I have to give some credit where credit is due. Now the hard drive, THAT should be pulled from every system being sold or even repaired but I guess they are slow at getting to that point. However, according to AMY_LENOVO, she has only been working on the issue a few months and I believe is just now receiving systems and/or pulled hard drives to investigate.

Having been a design engineer in the past, I can say that Amy is doing the right thing and taking the right steps especially with what limited power and tools that she has (plus other issues she is dealing with). I'm sure once she gets to the root problem, something will be done, at least moving forward. I can't say what Lenovo as a company will do for everyone affected by poor hard drive performance. I would hope they would offer a free replacement with a different drive or a credit for a customer to put one in themself. Only time will tell.

Good luck!

So

I just got my laptop back from the repair center... NOT REPAIRED. They said they didn't see any problem. I just can't believe it. The whole world knows about this issue, even the guy from my local Lenovo support Center said they know this problem and the only way is to send the laptop to the repair center... But too bad that the RC doesn't know about it!

So I was waiting few weeks for my laptop, but it came back not repaired. How great.

I am sad to hear what they did Poveu. What was the specified reason for the return? Slow drive? 100% disk drive usage? I'm just curious. I was really hopeful they would have swapped the drive. Are you still within time frame to return the product? If so, perhaps return it and get something else or keep complaining and elevate it to whereever you can to get some relief. Lenovo really sent out a lemon using that drive in their systems.

I would recommend that anyone with that drive either return the system or else take matters in their own hands like swapping out the drive which also appears to be troublesome according to the thread on making backup recovery.

This will most likely be the last lenovo product I ever buy. Espcially since they even make it difficult to swap out drives.

I am SO glad that Lenovo unilaterally decided to cancel my order for a Y50.

It turns out this unit is an unmitigated POS.

I have cancelled the orders I have presented for my customers for the Y50.

Unfortunately I have to agree! I really wanted to give Lenovo a chance by sending the machine to the repair center... You can only imagine my irritation when I finally got the laptop back after few weeks and saw this paper saying "We didn't see any problem, laptop sent back without repairing."...

And Helium, you are SO lucky your order was cancelled. It saved your nerves.

Matrixx - yep, my reason was 100% disk usage and huge data access time of the disk.

Hi, this is my first post on this forum.

I got a Y50 a few weeks ago. Will post specs later. I would like to upgrade my HDD to a WD Black2. I was worried that it might not fit: some sources on the Internet say yes, and some say no. Can someone clarify this problem for me, whether it actually fits or not? If it fits, must I remove the Black2's cover?

This forum post says that it fits:

Thanks in advance

I installed a 7mm Samsung 850 EVO to replace and it works and fits well. Machine is really fast now.

Funny enough I installed the old drive in a USB 3.0 craddle and performance is good :( I did low level erasa everything though.

Hope this helps!
