Re: Y50-70 Windows regularly freezes when 1TB SSHD is spinning up

2015-04-25, 14:03 PM

Guys help me out pls, if i buy samsung 1TB ( ST1000LM024 ) or WD 1 tb (WD10JPVT/WD10JPVX) then will the issue be resolved? Will it void my warranty ( i have 1+2 years extended warranty so am kinda worried about it) ?
and,if i buy a hdd enclosure can i use current laptop hdd as external.
i can't really afford a SSD, so 1tb hdd is pretty much my option.

Both of these are 9.5MM drives. The system houses a 7MM drive. So no, the drives you suggested do not work.

Re: warranty, there were no seals/stickers so do not think it will void anything. Contact Lenovo to be sure.

Yes, you can use the drive externally, it is what I do too. Pro tip: copy the drivers off the drive. Also remove all partitions with disport so you get more space on it.

To date, Lenovo has received two whole systems and two separate drives from customers reporting the freezing issue.

One of the drives showed nothing, but the second that arrived this week has issues. It is being escalated for root cause.

I hope to receive an additional 5 separate drives by mid-May. My hope is that one or more of these five drives will demonstrate the same issues as the drive above.

Thank you,

I got my y50-70 a week and a half ago, and I'm unable to run any game smoothly without freezing / crashing. It as the ST500LM000-SSHD-8GB drive.

The first few errors were from League of Legends, which was a TDR error.
Then 2 days ago I had another BSOD while playing Tera Online, which was a DPC watchdog violation.
Other crashes happened during Skyrim, just completly froze my laptop, which I had to hard restart. Other times during Skyrim, I would get a "display driver has stopped responding and recovered" message.

I've tried OKR to factory defaults and upgrading/downgrading drivers, but the laptop remains unable to game.
The clocks are at default, and the Nvidia graphics card hangs around 65 C during gaming. However, I've noticed that while playing Skyrim, the disk usage is often at 100%. This only happens for Skyrim and no other games that I've tried.

@Paramythia: You're actually pretty lucky to have received a different SSHD. That drive seems to be a much more common consumer-grade SSHD. At least you can find some reviews and info apart from angry Lenovo forum users.

As for your problem, there seems to be something very wrong. I'd try a fresh 8.1 install with the embedded key and see if it fixes. You'll have to manually download drivers, that is. If it doesn't work I'd definitely return the system in case there is something wrong with the GPU/Motherboard.

@MarcEcko

I've reinstalled windows 8.1 to factory defaults twice already, and tried different drivers.

I called Lenovo today and tech support said it was a faulty Nvidia card, so I asked for a replacement. I'll report back after I get the new machine.

Oh, sorry, I meant clean install as opposed to restoring from Lenovo factory image.

Actually it's great that you got an answer from the tech support guys. Good luck to you!

Re: Y50-70 Windows regularly freezes when 1TB SSHD is spinning up

Hi All,

I registered here after finding this thread, and to post up my experience.

I received my Y50 last week (which has the WD 1TB SSHD this thread is about), and the HD failed after 6 days. Before it failed, I did find it didn't have great performance - about the same as a standard 5400rpm drive, but some lags when opening folders etc.

Was gaming with GTA V and occasionally getting freezes of a few seconds (this happened maybe 3-4 times). The last freeze brought a BSOD, and on restart the Y50 couldn't find the OS.

(Note: I got rid of Win8.1 and iinstalled Win7 x64 the day I got my machine)

The HD was recognised in BIOS, but not by windows recovery. After a lot of testing and eventually on moving the HD to another machine, the other machine didn't see the HD - conclusion: HD dead.

I phoned Lenovo support and as the machine was new, they said to contact my retailer (Lenovo would provide an RMA reference) to get a refund or replacement. Since I'm going on holiday next week and specifically bought this laptop to take away, I wouldn't get this back in time, and would probably get another Y50 with the same poor HD so have had to remove the great SSHD from my other laptop and order a replacement for that one (at cost of £70  plus shipping). Not very happy to repace a faulty drive out on a new machine out of my pocket, but the alternative was to be without the machine for a while, and not be guaranteed a decent HD.

FYI the drive I fitted is one I swear by - ST1000LM014-1EJ164 Seagate 1TB-SSHD, great performance.

For those wondering, It is a 9.5mm and can be fitted just fine - there is foam cushioning above the original HD which should absorb the extra size.
