Re: Y50-70 Windows regularly freezes when 1TB SSHD is spinning up

Just adding another sad update to this already depressing thread. Amy’s “solution” of course did not work for my Y50-70. This WD hard drive is a complete waste of hardware. It’s sad that a USB flash drive can outperform this SSD hybrid drive. No driver updates or configuration changes have solved the stuttering issues, the laptop is essentially unusable for quite some time after initial login and stuttering in games is downright infuriating. Guess I’m going to have to invest in a new hard drive to replace this POS Lenovo sold us.  Definitely the last time I’ll buy from Lenovo.

An internal mech hard drive have to be choosen carefully, because it is almost constantly used by the OS : a fast one is required (7500rpm) with a big cache.

Man can find cheap HDs that works well as an external storage or a NAS, because they specs are low (5400rpm and a small cache, although a big capacity), unfortunately they do not perform very well in a workstation. I suspect this is the case of the 1.5tb you have.

If you can afford it, go for a 150€ SSD as the 500Gb Samsung EVO850 as I did : it will give your machine the performances you deserve.

Re: Y50-70 Windows regularly freezes when 1TB SSHD is spinning up

Incidentally i spotted that the disk load goes down when the WiFi is off. And back to 100% when WiFi is on. Have not seen this symptom described in any forums..

Two questions now. First - what if it's not exactly an SSHD problem, but somehow somewhat somewhere creates a conflict between something and another something and loads SSHD, when the WiFi is on (i know, a nicely put question, but i am not much of an advanced user).. So what if there is something that fixes this problem without replacing the SSHD?

Second - i am not sure now that replacing SSHD with an HDD or SSD will actually solve the problem.

Any thoughts?

Replacing it with a SSD will definitely solve any lag issues. I run mine with a Samsung 850 EVO for almost three years without a single disk issue. I also had reinstalled everything from scratch using the last Windows 10 at this time. I strongly recommend to do this.

Thanks Carnyx. Done, same SSD as yours. Feels like a new machine. The process of moving to the new disk was not that painless though.

Idk if i found solution for the topic, but i found some improvement. If somone is still fighting in 2018 try this:

Recently my disk usage was 100% very often, always on startup like 2-5 min. Sometimes just on idle, peaks of 100% disk usage, even like 2-3 minutes. that caused fps drops in games, stuttering with chrome or excel.. They have problem with other disc, but i found it helps with my WD SSHD. Here is extract:

"The problem seems to be the Link Power Management. If enabled, it causes extra delays for many disk operations. I am not sure if this is related to Samsung ST1000LM024 disk or Dell Inspiron 23 5348 specifically, but when I disabled the setting, I got my normal performance back!"

https://superuser.com/questions/1182651/windows-10-100-disk-usage-after-startup

Start Intel Rapid control center, go to performance tab and disable the link power managemet and you are done.

Second thing i did, i changed values in registry about memory management:

enableprefetcher, enablesuperfetch values from 3 to 1.

Here is example how to do it yourself(admin needed)

https://www.technipages.com/windows-enable-disable-superfetch

If somone are still fighting with freezes, let me know if it helped.
