Re: Y500 Lagging on battery

2013-03-20, 1:19 AM
Hmm, this is lenovo's fault, they have disabled hd4000, which could at least run some games and way better than a gpu throttled down to idle speeds.

With Alienware m18, at least dell disabled hd4000 on bios and can be enabled back with a bios mod. Sadly, it seems the hd4000 in the Y500 is disabled physically.

Personally, I would have been ok if Lenovo would just say it can't be done. But, after replying "we are looking into it" there have been no further reply whatsoever.

Maybe, just maybe, Lenovo is making a hd4000 ultrabay module that enables widi and optimus. That would be amazing, and hopefully they give it to y500 users for free... just maybe

Yeah,  fair enough,  but then people would be complaining about issues with Optimus and SLI.  Seems  like a  no-win.   I think an HD4000  would be a waste of the Ultrabay,  would rather keep  my blu-ray  drive in while on the go and play games on  my 3DS  or Vita  when I am unable to plug in.  with gaming laptops  some sacrifice is  to be expected,  and despite the minor issues here and there,  Lenovo has made a terrific machine.  It's just a little sad to see people so vehemently comparing over this.

Re: Y500 Lagging on battery

Your question is answered already.

It's a 72W battery, trying to run a single GT650m that needs a 120W adapter to power, or an SLI setup that needs a 170W adapter. It's *not possible* for the battery to keep up.

The HD4000 is disabled by HARDWARE and not able to run, so there is no low powered option.

You can *only* game with an adapter connected. Bottom line. End of. No changing it. No fix.

Thanks

I contacted them through phone support numerous times till someone finally told me that the y500 and y450 (don't know that one) are set in the bios to clock down as far as possible when on battery rendering gaming not possible to promote usage of the ac adapter when gaming. I was also advised (from one computer user to another) to look at the forums for possible bios mods to solve my issue (and of course void my warranty). I am appalled... Even my old acre aspire one net book with intel atom processor and graphics could play WOW on battery on low settings. This thing can't even play minecraft. Back in its box awaiting an RMA from newegg. I'm curious though as to how many people having this issue purchased their unit preconfigured for sli with dual graphics. Some people only report that one gpu cuts off on battery and the other runs as usual (confirmed in screen shots). But many of those bought the second card after.

One does cut off and one does run.

When you're buying a machine of this power, you cannot expect it to run full power on a battery.

I'm seriously confused with all of this hatred. The responses here are apalling, not the fact that it wont run on battery for gaming.

For the BIOS mod, there's an official 2.02 upgrade, then you can mod it and flash it back if you want to send it back for warrenty.

Usraek. Then why are some users getting one gpu to run "normally" on battery. There are YouTube videos owners stating that one gpu cuts off but they can use the other. I understand the concept of power but there are many less beefy laptops running 650m cards on battery. Lenovo just needs to provide owners a better battery. I'm gonna get a sager after this is over anyway. Sure it's Optimus but you can choose not to use the imbedded graphics even on battery. Time to get a real laptop
