Y500 Ultrabay Options HDD

2012-12-06, 16:32 PM

I have just received my new Y500, but I would like to get an Ultrabay for a second HDD, actually moving the original disk to the Ultrabay and replacing the original with a SSD. I cannot find what might fit the new Y500 model. Any help would be great.

Re: Y500 Ultrabay Options HDD

I just ordered the doorbuster deal Y500, the advertising on this model as well as the gallery shows the ultrabay in place.  Ha!  I'll wait until it arrives to see but when asking the "chat" person I got an unintelligible response, something like "after you place order" - what???

Anyway I certainly expect it to come with the ultrabay as depicted.  If so it should be a simple thing to put the TB HDD where the DVD is and install a 256GB SSD in it's place to lay down Linux (or whatever you use).  That should make it a pretty decent laptop for all but intense users especially with the 1920x1080 screen.

It is a bit disconcerting that no mention is made of ultrabay options to order direct - poor marketing and poor release tactics, hope the machine is better.  Overall the tech specs are weakly given, like, is it really SATA II or SATA III etc.  Probably not even SATA III, can't get that answer either.  Come on Lenovo, buyers want to know what it is they are buying!  This will be my third Lenovo, first was X61 tablet (still works with LInux), ideaPad U160 (great with Mint) and now this Y500.  Good stuff but.....

I just bought the y500 door crasher as well. I am waiting for the surprise features not mentioned online. Who knows what great things it might have.

I am in Canada. The Canadian site is worse then the American for information on prodcuts. This is my third Lenovo laptop so obviously I love them and keep coming back.

I had to use the American site to get the pictures. Third party reviews to find out if the keyboard was actually back lit and in what colour or possible colours. (My wife's *****ware lets you select different colours according to your mood)

I love the pic of the y500 highlighting features with arrows pointing to random spots on the laptop.

i laugh at the effort needed to learn about the product before buying. It's why I am going to be the only person inmy peer group who owns one. The pictures on the Canadian site were for the y480 but had the part number, description, and specs for the y500. I hope I get the right one.

^^ I just ordered my doorbuster y500 and I tried putting in the model number to search for possible accessories in hopes of seeing ultrabay accessories to verify that it was an ultra bay model but none of the models showed anything about the ultra bag....frustrating

I removed the dvd drive from my y500 and found that there's a plastic locking mechanism that is screwed on to it, allowing for it to be swapped easily. It looks like the mechanism can be easily removed and put on say, a 12.7mm generic hard drive caddy which would cost arount $10. Only problem is the bezel on the dvd drive seems locked on tight. I'm holding off replacing the dvd drive till I figure out how to remove that bezel.

Can anyone on here verify a caddy that works.  I'd also like to replace primary with ssd.  Thanks in advance.

I just talked with a sales rep, and all the Y500's have the UltraBay.  They also have an mSATA port, so you could just add a 64GB mSATA SSD and get the SLI GFX setup.
