Y510 Battery Life

2008-07-25, 12:34 PM

Hey Everyone,

I just got my new y510 ideapad 1.83g core 2 duo, 2gig ram, 8600m GT a little under 2 months ago and there is a question I had regarding battery life.  To be frank, my battery life is horrible.  On a full charge, I can get 1 hour 24 minutes using balanced power mode and brightness to halfway.  Using power saving and minimum brightness and everything off I can get 1 hour 46 minutes.  I imagine this is bad right?  Anyone else have similar problems?  Also, what type of battery life does everyone else get? Thanks

Hi,

I have the same config, the only difference is the 4GB RAM and I have to say that I have the same experience... I think it's because of the VGA card...

I have even undervolted to 1.135v and it only gave me 10-20 minutes.  Underclocking video card didn't help either, though it did help temps.  Btw what are you guys getting for cpu temp?  I'm getting 54-58C on power saving and 59-64C max

Try turning off Aero Glass and the special vista effects.  Also, what kind of programs are you using?  Games and movies will reduce your battery life like next to nothing but if you are doing simple web browsing, that is bad battery life and you may want to see about getting a beefier battery.  When SSDs drop in price, you may want to consider swapping out your HDD with one of those since they sap less energy.

Soyuz, it's not pleasant to say, but you're not right. SSD's are not power-saving. They are faster at random reads but they eat energy constantly unlike HDD's that eat energy only during seek. See some reviews over internet - first one was on THG.

Energy consumption depends on videocard, LCD brightness, HDD intencity work and CPU speed.

To atjust level of consumption Lenovo develoed EnergyCut - you can change presets by pressing NOVO button in Windows. Also you can atjust that presets.

I know this isn't exactly an Apples to Apples comparison, but...

my Y510 with the intel integrated video and XP gets about 2.5 hours on a charge, which I consider more than acceptable on a $520 notebook.

I get about the same as chuang2 as far as temperature goes, however, I do have a longer battery with a fully upgraded Y510 but my undervolted settings are different.

I use the RMclock utility and I modified the voltage on each multiplier except the lowest x6.

11x - 1.0375v

10x - 1.0250v

9x - 1.0000v

8x - 0.9875v

7x - 0.9625v

6x - 0.9500v

Usually runs at 56 c and a low that drops to 50 c with a high at 64 c

What are you talking about, SSDs do save battery life. You may have heard about the older ones and the ones meant for desktops that are designed purely for performance with no regard for power.  I found all of these that backup my claims that SSDs do save power http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/06/new-report-says-ssds-are-in-fact-more-efficient/ http://blog.laptopmag.com/web-surfing-test-shows-ssds-better-for-battery-life http://storagemojo.com/2006/07/04/ssdulv-changing-battery-life-as-we-know-it/ http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/15/toms-hardware-rescinds-ssd-power-test-finds-them-more-efficien/ http://blog.laptopmag.com/toms-hardware-we-were-wrong-about-ssd-power-consumption so yes, most new SSDs do actually save you some power.

Few models of SSD are better than few models of HDD in energy consumptption when they both work hard. At idle process most HDD models eat less battery than most SSD drives.
