Re: Y510 and XP: Brightness Hotkeys don't work

2008-03-13, 14:06 PM
All,

I've reported this issue to engineering and am told that it works on our system here.

Has anyone on this thread called support or sent their unit for service for this issue?    I'd like to know the outcome of that.

I'll continue to watch to see if more Y510 customers report this symptom.

Thanks!

Re: Y510 and XP: Brightness Hotkeys don't work

Mark,

One of my computer clients bought a y510 because I like mine so much. I blew away Vista and put XP on, and redid all the XP drivers in the same order as the Vista drivers on the Vista driver disk.

It has the exact same brightness hotkey problem.

BTW, the brightness hotkeys work correctly in the following environments:

DOS (at the DOS prompt and running DOS program)
The XP Boot Menu
The Vista Boot Menu
GRUB (the Linux Boot Menu)
Windows Vista
Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 Alpha 6

It only doesn't work running XP after the drivers are installed.

THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SOFTWARE DRIVER ISSUE WITH XP. It is obviously not a hardware issue. Note that the EnergyCut sofware is able to change the brightness in XP as well just fine, and the hotkeys work in every other OS I've tried. It is just the hotkeys under XP.

If I were to guess, the new placement of the brightness hotkeys (Function + Arrow Up and Function + Arrow Down) are sending different keycodes than a typical ThinkPad (Function + Home and Function + End), and someone just recycled the old Thinkpad hotkey driver (or video driver, since the hotkey driver at least displays the little brightness "thermometer" ) without reprogramming it for the new keycodes.

Please reiterate to your engineers that we are talking about XP AND we are talking about XP with all the available downloadable XP drivers installed. Please reiterate that the brightness level indicator appears, but it doesn't actually change, and neither does the brightness level itself. And please have them try again.

(Or tell me who to contact in order to move this along.)

Even I can reproduce it on two machines, and I'm only a hardware and software reviewer for a major monthly computer magazine, rather than a QA Engineer working at Lenovo.

Thanks in advance, Mark. I appreciate your efforts at what must at times seem like a thankless job.

Wernst,

Thanks for the clarifications.  In fairness to our team, I didn't provide these parameters, so if they checked under vista, then as you have observed, all would have been reported well.

Thanks for the extra leg work - will look into it further.

Mark,

Well, it's been two weeks since I last mentioned the brightness hotkey problem.

Any word back from QA about being able to reproduce it and/or solve it?

Thanks,
Warr

Hi all,

I'm from france and yesterday i called the lenovo hotline to have any news about this problem, the operator told me that she didn't have any idea about this problem and Lenovo is only able to guarantee the support for Windows Vista ...

So if there's anybody here who can help me, that would be very great :)

For informations, i tired to use the y710 driver on the y510, no results, it was even worst :p so, don't try this at home.

Hi,

Same problem here - Y510, XP, and the brightness seems to be hard-locked to the power preset (selectable by Novo button). I guess it's a bug or misfeature of EnergyCut driver (XP version only).

Hope it will be fixed soon.

Thanks,
Mikhail

Wernst,

Thanks for the reminder.  I'm not ignoring you.   In terms of development, this is a lower severity issue in that it doesn't otherwise impair the normal operation of the system, and XP remains a best effort support environment.

I can't promise a specific timeframe to get this resolved, and would offer guidance that it will likely be at least several more weeks.

I will continue to pursue the issue.

Thanks.

Mark,

Thanks for looking into it. I'll check back periodically to see what happens.

Still, after two weeks, I was rather hoping you could tell us that the QA staff were able to reproduce the problem, and/or Lenovo proper could at least acknowledge that the problem really officially exists.

A previous poster states they called Lenovo support and they were unaware that there was even a problem.

Thanks,
Warr
