Y510P Windows Product Key Blocked?

2015-06-12, 9:01 AM

Hello all!

Bit of an issue I am looking for some advice on.

I have recently bought a used Y510P with SLI GT750's- very excited about it naturally.

The seller promised that it would be restored back to windows 8 and it is clear he has done this, the laptop has come with Win 8 Pro installed on it.

However this is where the problems begin.

Upon starting the computer and reaching desktop it asks me to activate windows. I go to do this and it comes up with an error that the Product Key is blocked?

I then went through Microsoft's phone activation and again the same result Product Key Blocked.

I then spoke to a human and went through the process again and yes the Product Key is blocked.

They suggested I contact Lenovo.

I understand that currently Win 8 product Keys are stored in the BIOS to prevent people stealing Product Keys. Though it would appear that has happened in my case?

Therefore it would appear to me that the answer is to obtain a new Product Key for Win 8 Pro and activate that way? If so will the new Product Key overwrite the one stored in the BIOS? Will there be any problems in the future i.e. when I update to Win 8.1 and then Win 10 following this approach?

I also don't think it is necessary to reinstall Win 8 Pro on the laptop as it is already there just not activated is this also correct?

If there is anything obvious I am missing please let me know I am obviously very frustrated by this.

Check what version is really pre-installed in the unit by going into the bios. Under information you should see the License info.

In the BIOS under information it states:

Windows License WIN8 STD MBR LPG

Does that help?

That means that the license is for Windows 8 Standard (Not Pro) and probably Legacy (MBR partition style installation? 32bit?). Sorry I could not interpret LPG.

You can try downloading media creation tool (google it) and use it to download Win 8.1 free (try 64 bit if it works if not 32 bit). Do not choose the PRO version. See if the embedded product key will be accepted and automatically activate the OS when you connect to the internet. Note boot mode = Legacy to get MBR.

It think it was LPG or IPG the font was not the best in the bios!

I'm not particularly great with Computers I do apologise, where does that leave me in terms of what I can do to rectify the problem?

I am attempting the media creation tool method thanks for the tip.

Though I notice that it says Windows 8 Pro in various other places - like system info and on the bottom right corner of the desktop, why would this be? It also confirms that it is 64 Bit

Update:

No the Media Creation Tool did not work- the product key was rejected.

What else can be done?

If you rely on the info within the Win 8 Pro system you will always get Win 8 Pro as the OS. However, from the license info in the bios it shows that it is not Win 8 PRO. It is just Win 8 Standard.

What version of Win 8.1 did you choose to download using the media creation tool?

Suggestion: Rather than looking for other means to make the installed OS activated, why not just return that to the seller? It is clear that the installed OS is a problem. Unless he can find a solution better return it.

I attempted to install the 64 bit version. Your right of course, the only thing the seller has suggested is a new Product Key for it. I was trying to avoid the hassle of the return but this is turning into a greater faff than that is so I think I'll take your advice.

I appreciate your time on this - hopefully the next 510 will be more straightforward!

Cheers.
