Y510p not detecting NGFF SSD

2014-07-06, 21:51 PM

Hello,

I just soldered a NGFF connector to my laptop's motherboard, and I installed a 128GB MyDigitalSSD SSD and it is not being detected, I can't find it in the disk management as well. I called Lenovo technical support yesterday and they told me that installing the connector should be enough, no additional ICs or controllers are required.

I tried a few solutions,including :

1. Switching the boot to Legacy instead of UEFI.

2. Reinstalled the chipset driver.

3. Installed ExpressCache and it didn't work either.

Note: The SSD seems like it is getting power since I can feel the heat when I touch it.

Thanks,

Hush

NGFF is for M.2 type, right? I think that producers can have M.2 SSD drives with PCI-E interface or with SATA interface. So maybe the question is which interface type is your MyDigitalSSD and which interface type is being used by Lenovo?

@Hush, I know you are asking for help in all the different forums about this. I sure hope you find a solution but as I said on the other forums you are probably out of luck on this one. I have a feeling there is more than just a missing slot on the motherboard and you are not getting power or something to the new connector.

@Shiv_K: Thank for your advice :)

@bogdan_kr: The SSD fits perfectly in the space, and somehow I've been convinced that the problem is from the SSD, so I returned it and I bought a new one(16gb) and a M.2 to SATA connector so that I check the source of the problem :)

@Varroa: I might be out of luck, one last expirement(the one above) and I'll be convinced, I'm hoping that the SSD is defective :)

HUSH1994, the thing is the drive with SATA interface would have the same connector as the PCIE version. I may be wrong but googled a little bit and it seems Lenovo uses PCIE standard while your SSD most likely was SATA one.

@Bogdan_kr: Hmmm, interesting, so the difference between PCIE and SATA is not based on the shape of the connector only then? By the way I know that the normal HDD in the device uses a SATA connection, am I right?

As far as I understand it correctly it comes down to the interface type, connector is the same for both. Normal 2,5' HDD uses normal SATA connector (and SATA interface). All it can be confusing I guess.

Exactly, this is the SSD that I got, its connector is different.

I have a question on my mind now, is it possible for the system to detect whether a connector is available or not?
