Re: NO XP Mode for Lenovo Notebooks!!!

2009-11-01, 2:55 AM

I received direct information from Lenovo support that there are absolutely no plans to add VT support to any of the Ideapads.

Some one should definitely follow up on Middleton's offer and provide him the requested BIOS info; I would myself but have gotten rid of my Ideapad and acquired a ThinkPad T400.

Good luck and I hope someone can develop a work-around.

The workaround already exists,  see http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/U330-bios-doesn-t-enable-virtualization-techonology-mode/td-p/97641;jsessionid=15C358898DDA4DD857EEDA6B078E1A7E.  But it is a tricky and risky one. And each one has to to go through all the steps:

  1. Confirm that your CPU supports VT.
  2. Dump your bios (cannot use anybody else’s or Lenovo’s).
  3. Patch the VT flag (and check sum) on the dumped bios.
  4. Verify the patch.
  5. Flash back the patched bios.

I am looking into applying it to my Y730. I'll post if I have any success.

In the meantine I want to say that I am extremely disappointed with Lenovo. Sony and Acer owners had the same issue and they can now download VT-enabled bioses; Lenovo owners cannot. When I first bought my Ideapad, I couldn’t have imagined that Lenovo’s support was worse than Acer’s!

This workaround is suitable for InsydeH2O BIOSes only. As far as I know Lenovo Y730, Y330 and U330 have InsydeH20 based BIOS. But Y450, for example, have Phoenix SecureCore BIOS, Y530 is AMI Aptio BIOS based laptop and so on.

Hey, Y550 owners, if you really want to enable VT for your laptops then tell me the type of Y550 BIOS at last.

These results mean that virtualization is disabled on BIOS level. Flashing BIOS version with enabled VT can solve the problem but there isn't such BIOS at the moment. I already have Y550 firmware and I will try to analyze it and turn VT on. But don't wait too much from me - Phoenix UEFI BIOS is a little complicated, so probability of success is not so great.
