Re: Y550 Virtualization Problem!!

When we change (0378) and (037B) from zero to one, BIOS enables not only virtualization but also SMRR and VMX inside SMX. We don't need it so lets try to enable virtualization only. To do that you have to change (039C) and (039F) from one to zero. How it should look (variables to change are selected with a bold font):

(036C) [0000]
(036F) [0001]
(0378) [0001]
(037B) [0001]

(037E) [0000]
(0381) [0000]
(0384) [0001]
(0387) [0000]
(038A) [0001]
(038D) [0000]
(0390) [0000]
(0393) [0000]
(0396) [0000]
(0399) [0001]
(039C) [0000]
(039F) [0000]
(03A5) [0000]
(03A8) [0000]

I hope this method will help you to activate VT.

Re: Y550 Virtualization Problem!!

middleton - I did the dump and added the "0001" bits to 0378 and 037B.  039C did not exist, so I added it with the "0000" bits. 039F was already set at "0000". I saved and restarted the machine. Shortly after startup, It locked up. I went back and did a dump again. The 039C was not there and I repeated the add, save and dump and still nothing. That does not appear to be a valid register? What else do you suggest?

Thanks middleton.

I did the solution you provided for Y550.

It works very nice.

Now, I can run my MAC OS X smoothly on VMware.

I don't remember whether you wrote here the values of MSR-register 3A. If you didn't, then read this message. And tell me one thing: Your machine locks up during Windows booting or after the system completely loads?

The machine locks a few minutes after the OS loads.

One more thing: your machine locks when you leave the system alone not touching mouse and keyboard or when you are doing something (if it's your case then describe your actions which lock the system).

I suppose that you have software or hardware problems. Lets do the following to exclude software:

Activate virtualization with my guide, and boot to Windows in "Safe mode" (you have to press F8 when your machine starts). If in safe mode everything will work fine then you probably have software problems. Also you can download live-CD or DVD with Linux or Windows which can boot from CD- or DVD-media without installation on hard drive. Work in such operating system within some time: if there will be no locks then software problems in your Windows which is installed on hard drive are more than likely.

I was able to boot in to Safe Mode with no issues. I tried to boot into Vista 64bit on another partition and the computer locked during the boot, unlike Windows 7, which at least boots in the the OS before locking. I also didn't have an issue with a CD version of Linux.

When you in safe mode, try to run CrystalCPUID and place here results. Maybe we activate not virtualization, but something else.
