Y550P touchpad and keyboard are not working.

2011-04-21, 20:59 PM

Greetings o wise ones, need your help!

Have had this lenovo ideapad Y550P for little over a year.  Today all of a sudden both touchpad and keyboard stopped working.  I use external usb mouse and onscreen keyboard now.  nothing works, i've tried all Fn key combos (including Fn+F6), fooled with Ease of Access settings, deleted devices in Device manager and restarted the system letting it update itself automatically - nada.  This is what I have now in my Device Manager:

Device Manager

Mice and other pointing devices

  • HID-compliant mouse
  • Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mouse (IntelliPoint)
  • [?] Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad

Keyboards

  • HID Keyboard Device
  • HID Keyboard Device
  • Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard
  • Microsoft eHome MCIR Keyboard
  • Microsoft eHome Remote Control Keyboard Keys
  • Standard PS/2 Keyboard
I have a strong suspision that it has something to do with MS eHome MCIR Keyboard, but want to get a 2nd opinion.
I run Win 7 HP 64-bit.
I've read through all KB-related issues on this forum and have not come across one identical to mine, hence starting the new thread.  Many thanks for any help you someone can give.  I have a flight in less than 12 hours and a totally useless laptop :/

Another important note - none of the keys at POST work - no F2, F8, or F12.  Can't even get into BIOS.

Well, it's really a weird situation. As you said, no keys are being read at POST. I'd assume something on the motherboard is weird. See, both the touchpad and keyboard are on different ribbons, so a dual failure would probably be chip-based.

Either way, does it work with external control devices (keyboards, mice, etc)?

For now I am using external USB mouse and on-screen keyboard. Stranger thing is that Volume/Mute buttons right of keyboard are not working either, but Power and OneKey Recovery do.

So I did go stupid and tried to open up laptop, to check if the ribbons are connected properly. half way through the surgery (once I removed the back screws and attempted lifting the top plate to access the keyboard) I decided to turn on and see what's up. Everything is working, which leads me to believe that issue was with the ribbons. So for now it's working. What I would like to see is a nice how-to open and replace/check keyboard on IdeaPads. Youtube does not have anything that is specific to IdeaPad Y series.
