Here is the path to the Windows Power Options. Control Panel-->Power Options--> Edit Plan Settings.

Click on the [+] next to the option you want to change. Use the drop down box to change the setting.

They can be used for gt555m aswell, but as you mentioned, they did no good for me either. Still had the lagging issue. I'm just about to try the 285.79 though

This is just a guess, but since you haven't been back since your last post, you must be playing?

Re: Y570 - Why do games run better off my battery and choppy when its plugged in?

2012-01-27, 22:04 PM

I don't know what I did but somehow I have stopped the stuttering! I have been trying to get it back just to make sure it's gone but I can't seem to make it stutter, I have tried changing the power scheme, minimizing the game and running it again, unplugging the charger and plugging it back in during the game and before I open the game but I think it's gone, all I've done is create a power plane with the default High performance settings and poof, it's gone.

Re: Y570 - Why do games run better off my battery and choppy when its plugged in?

So I've tried the 285.79 drivers and balanced power management and balanced windows power plan settings(they both synchronize on my pc, don't know why) and for about an hour and a half there was no stuttering with me. So I'll try the high performance plan with 285.79 drivers and see if it is still no stuttering..if it is, there may be a problem in the lenovo energy managment..if it's not, then it might be the nvidia driver, which causes me to think that if it's nvidia, why was my CPU throttling before and not now. I'll do some more skyrim playing and perhaps even bf3 but for now, it's not stuttering at all with skyrim. Pretty weird but I feel good. All of you should try the 285.79 drivers, for which I've posted the link in few posts before this one, and put their lenovo energy mangement to balanced, then press start, type power in the search tab, press choose a power plan, then click on balanced, and start the game. Constant 60 fps for me now. Well we will see if it's like that after next few reboots of the pc. I'll report back to you guys tomorrow and I'll try to post a video on youtube to see how it works for me.

Good luck to you all!

Re: Y570 - Why do games run better off my battery and choppy when its plugged in?

Before I got this laptop I had a new HP dv6- 6136tx with specs almost like this lenovo, seeing that I could sell the HP and buy the lenovo at no cost to me I did because the lenovo had a slightly better CPU & GPU  Well the HP had switchable graphics as well and it run like a pig until I turn off the automatic switchable graphics in bios (I changed it from dynamic to Fixed Mode) and when I want to use the battery I needed to right click on the desktop choose switchable graphics in the dialogue box then select power saving mode changing it from performance mode. The reason I changed it is because I was getting that stuttering or choppy lag **shyt** happening during playing games.  (Brief history)

I believe this was happening because in some places of the game you have less graphics than others and the switchable graphics gets tricked into believing it should switch to power saving mode, once you get passed the low graphic part of the game it needs more graphic power and being in power saving mode it starts to stuttering or choppy lag. That's why I always have my laptop on performance mode. Personally I believe having a computer automatically switch graphics is a stupid idea, as the user you alone know what power setting to have the laptop set to.

I agree, I had the HP dv7 laptop before aswell. Traded it in because fixed mode was causing freezing for me and on dynamic I couldn't play battlefield 3 on full screen. So I took this lenovo, thinking that it has practically the same specs, but I was disappointed because there was no "fixed" graphic mode. The automatic graphics I think are great for users with general purposes like using the MS Office or Youtube or Vimeo or something. But for gamers, auto graphics like nvidia's optimus isn't actually the best. We would like to use our GPU to the max ALL the time, not just when the computer deems it fit.

BTW, another good hour of skyrim is over and still no stuttering! So I'll be making videos of skyrim on the details on which I play skyrim, then the Ultra detail with 285.79 drivers and balanced power plan. I shall try to upload them tomorrow.

Sorry for one post straight after another but my edit button seems to not work today. So here's the link to the promised skyrim video without stuttering and considered playable even on ultra settings.

All the settings and specs are found in the description of the video.

Still no response from Lenovo Rep stating that they sold a malfunctioning product?

Hah don't get your hopes high about them ever admiting that. They'll say it runs perfectly when they "stress test it".

Hey zitnikp,
that's an awesome vid of skyrim, but my laptop's a bit slower than yours its the 2630QM (2.0 GHz) and my skyrim still kinda lags like most of the people's lenovos here.  Other than the fact that you used 285.79 Nvidia driver and a balanced power setting, is there any other tweaking you did?  (Sorry if you mentioned it before I don't think I can read through 22 pages of forums).  Anything about the lenovo power settings, the battery power settings, etc.
