Y570 gt555m TDR and BSOD when pluged in.

2013-12-27, 20:24 PM

Hello Lenovo Community,

So i've had my y570 for over 1.5 years now. Ever since this summer my NVidia graphic card has been unusable. The problem is as follows:
If i start any game what so ever the screen will start freezing, turning black and then the cycle repeats.

I get the message "Display driver Nvidia Windows Kernel Mode driver, has stopped responding and has successfully " about every 5 seconds until it freezes the lap top completly.
Strangly enough it runs perfectly fine on battery, not a singe hitch, lag, anything. The GPU is being used as it should be.
Now, if i start a game of lets say League of Legeds on battery it will run perfectly, plug in the power cord it freezes, plug it out - back to normal.
I have the 285.79 drivers.
I have a fresh Windows 7 Professional 64bit, the usual i7267QM, 6GB ram, 32gb SSD setup.
The power plan is set to High performance in windows and in Lenovo energy. The Battery vs Plugged in settings are exactly the same.
I've tryied about 15 drivers all with clean instal by now and nothing works. The only way i can use my NVidia card is while running on battery.
It worked for a full year without this problem, flawlessly so it can't really be a faulty GPU at least i believe that.

Has anyone had a similar problem?
Any help would be really appreciated, thank you.

Best regards,

Aleksandar Anokic

The GPU drivers are far too outdated. Try updating to the latest drivers from NVIDIA here: http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Also, open up the laptop to clean some dust clogged in the fan and heatsink assembly. I do think that overheating is the cause since running the GPU on battery cuts it's power and heat output significantly which the cooling system can easily do its job. One of the symptoms of GPU overheating is freezing then blank screen then Nvidia recovery message.

Also, reinstall the Energy Management software here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS027354

Monitor your GPU temps with GPU-Z and make sure to set a log. Check the GPU temperature in the log and see what temp it reached before the GPU crashes.

I have tryied 314 series as recomended to be the most reliable, also i've tryied the latest, and about 12 in between. None of them make any difference.
I clean my laptop once in 3 months, i keep it really really clean and dust free, already checked.
It's not temperature related, i happens anywhere from 50 - 75 degrees.

I have reinstaled Lenovo Energy management, no dice. I tryied by uninstaling it completly, no dice.

I do know my way around computers, but this is mind blowing.

It's as almost the increased power juice is making the problems. Since it starts the second i plug it in, not even a minute after so it can't heat up in a second really.
I do not know if plugging it in makes the GPU use more power or has higher voltages, but i can't think of a different reason.
Not heat/driver related. Also i've set every possible option for runing on battery to match those runing while plugged in in an effort to try and recreate the crash while using battery power, no dice.

Appreciate the help mate :)
Is there any way to see and manipulate raw power consumtion on the GPU?

It can be the power adapter failing to provide the juice your GPU and CPU needs while gaming. Have you tried with another spare power adapter?

Well, you can always reduce the GPU power consumption by downloading EVGA Precision X (http://www.evga.com/precision/) and downclocking your GPU to 700 MHz. But the fact that there's a problem with GPU running at stock clocks can't be just ignored. I still think the power brick might be failing though.

Ok so ive got my GPU-Z sensor log right here, and boy is this a fun read.
Broken down:

i Plug in my cord at 02:19:05 and thats when everything goes to hell.
My clock speed goes from 750 to 50 in a second, memory clock drops from 1570 to 135.
Temperature sensor stops working
And the voltage goes from 1.0800 to 0.8300

So it definitly has something to do with power. Would love to see if there is a way to force it to keep a constant voltage of default 1.0800.

This is really wierd, that an extra dosage of power from the AC plumits my GPU voltage, makes no sense.

Well, that's really wierd. Usually it's the other way around when the battery can't provide enough power to run the GPU to its max. I never use the NVIDIA GPU on battery though.

Anyways, ever tried of removing the battery and then start using the Nvidia GPU?

Also, can you tell me your BIOS version too? I'm running BIOS 2.10.

I have tryied to remove the battery and run it only on AC power, it just crashes when the game starts.

I'm actually rocking 2.09, didn't knew an update existed. I see there is a 2.06 listed in the support/driver section from the website, thats a fun update :) . Any chanse of giving me a download link for that 2.10?

Tried downlocking the GPU to 590/1100, no dice.
The voltage control is locked as expected on a mobile chip so i can't fiddle with that.
I will try getting my hands on a new AC cord and a battery in the next two weaks, so i'll update here if it makes any changes.

My money is on a hardware failure, tho it still doesn't makes any sense why it works while running only on battery power.

After that I'll send it to my reseller for service so if anyone has any ideas by then, feel free to post, i'll give it a shot.

Happy holidays! :)
