Z50-70 bios update without windows

2017-04-14, 21:19 PM

I've got a Z50-70.  I would like to update the BIOS.  I haven't had a windows partition on this box in years.

I do have a freedos USB I can boot from.  I have sorted out that I can unzip the bios from Lenovo support and get:

ls /media/mfs/D57D-06E9//bios
Ding.wav

FWUpdLcl.exe

iscflash.sys

platform.ini
FlsHookDll.dll

InsydeFlash.exe

iscflashx64.sys

xerces-c_2_7.dll
FlsHook.exe

iscflash.dll isflash.fd

Is there a method to flash the bios from DOS?  I don't wanna brick it.

Hello Zipadeedooda

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

It seems your download may perhaps be corrupt, I would recommend that you download again, and see if that makes any difference for you.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Huh? I was asking if there was a procedure for doing the upgrade from DOS instead of windows. I haven't actually attempted the update, as I don't know if it is possible to update from DOS. Can I just run one of the executables in the update package? if so, which one? Are there any arguments to the command line?

If a update package is not list (which last I looked) then NO.
You therefore would have to have a running windows environment that supported EG what came with the notebook and execute from it.

ThinkPads are the only platform offering what you ask.

I am where you are right now, but my freedos keeps complaining that fwudlcl cant be executed in DOS mode. It seems it's a DPMI application. My Freedos is version 1.01, automatically installed using Rufus. I have heard that newer version of Freedos (current is 1.2 as of Dec 2016) are DPMI capable. I don't know how to update my Freedos but maybe that helps.

Alternatively you may try to find a true 16 bit fwupdcl.exe and replace the one supplied by the firmware package?

Only the Thinkpad business line offer alternative bios upgrade packages.

If you did not upgrade the bios fully before switching operating systems. You'll have to put in a HD with it on it to updated and switch it back out. There are other ways but you still need Windows and a supported version for the package.

If you don't have a valid Windows 10 licence for your system, be aware that Microsoft offer a "try before you buy" scheme.

You can download a Windows 10 install image from Microsoft (circa 4 GB), install it on your system, and try it for up to 30 days.  During this period you could (of course)  update the BIOS.  If you decide that Windows 10 is not for you, simply delete the Windows 10 partitions and restore the image of your FreeDos system that you created before installing Windows 10.

If I were in your situation, I would create an image of ALL of the existing partitions before trying install Windows 10, as Windows 10 might decide to delete everything on your disk before installing itself.

I'm still interested in a reasonable method to update the BIOS without windows.  (I totally get one solution is "install windows"... but that doesn't address the original question.)

Agreed, but it does answer the question:  How can I update the BIOS without being forced to purchase a Windows 10 licence?  This might be an important consideration for Linux users.

You don't have to license or rather activate it for the time you're using it anyway. Unactivated will run at least 30 days and Windows 10 is free activation anyway. Download the respective package for your notebook. EG Home 32 or 64 bit

It can be done on any computer to burn a DVD in the process. You'd want another HD so its not wiping out the non windows installation.
Once you have Window 10 installed you can download the BIOS update package to update the firmware and once done acces bios to confirm and set the setting for the other HD you need which is not likely UFEI booting. Shutdown and swap the other drive back in.
