Z51/70 2nd SSD Drive not wokring in Caddy

2015-12-14, 14:31 PM

Hi,

From beginning my adventure with Z51/70 I've replaced 1TB hdd with Kingston hyper x 3x ssd 120, as I don't use dvd I've bought caddy replacement for dvd, put there 1TB hdd and everything works. Few days ago i bought samsung evo 850 250gb ssd as a replacement for 1TB hdd (sometimes squeaks a lot and drives me crazy).

So I've change HDD with new SDD in caddy and Lenovo doesn't recognize it in bios and OS, so first thought was that sdd is broken so i put it in mainboard and it is recognized correctly, after that I try all possible combination with MB sata interface and caddy

MB <- SSD Kingston working
Caddy <- HDD working

MB <- SSD Samsung working
Caddy <- HDD working

MB <- SSD Kingston working
Caddy <- SSD Samsung not working

MB <- SSD Samsung working
Caddy <- SSD Kingston not working

MB <- HDD working
Caddy <- SSD Kingston not working

MB <- HDD working
Caddy <- SSD Samsung not working

AND also
MB <- SSD Kingston working
Caddy <- HDD working
USB <- SSD Samsung working

BIOS 2.00

If is plugs in fine I would venture there is a ID jumper required/removed for that bay. Check the install details from Crucial on the configuration options. I should detect it otherwise. I cannot think of anything else that would prevent the bios from seeing it.

Hi !
I am trying to set up a SSD / HDD config on the Z51.
I couldn't figure how to even make the Caddy <-- HDD config work properly.
Could you provide me with your Caddy model, or tell me if you have performed BIOS/drivers upgrades to make it work ?

First of all try update bios
Second find in your caddy small jumper and change it position.

Hi all,

Same problem here. I was trying to make HDD caddy work with Samsung Evo 250GB SSD inside, but without success. BIOS updated to the latest available version. I have also tried different jumper positions.

HDD Caddy is also fine, I have tried in my old Thinkpad T410 and all works good.

Disk is not recognized neither by BIOS or OS (Windows 10 Enterprise).

Do you think is there a chance that it is some kind of general BIOS issue, I have found similar subjects on Lenovo Z50 laptops...?

It's looks like a BIOS problem (maybe bug in power management system).

Now when I'm not the only one, what Lenovo thinks about this situation?

I have updated bios, changed jumper position, tried to switch SSD/HDD, I even tried with an old 120G SSD, each time the drive in the caddy is randomly recognized/ignored after restart or even standby. I am thinking to return the laptop, while I still can, an other disappointment is the battery which seems diffucult if not impossible to replace..

Hi,

I have the same problem with my Lenovo Z51-70. Drives in the caddy are not recognized in the OS or in the BIOS at anytime. I don't know what to do. I just contact my caddy provider (HDDCaddy), but I don't think the caddy is the problem.

It's very annoying. It's the first time I buy a Lenovo product, and I'm a bit disappointed... Please Lenovo, do something if there is a problem with the power management in the BIOS or anything !
