Z510 battery goofing up

2015-07-09, 12:37 PM

A few days ago, my battery level refused to go down while running on battery, and it would take 30 minutes to reach 100% charge from 99%. Today, it seems like my battery won't charge properly. The battery level jumps from around 15% too 100% suddenly while charging, and works only for about 5 minutes. It's really sudden, so I don't think it ought to be an issue with the battery. Even the battery wear percentage is at 16%, which I think is acceptable for a year old laptop. Any clues?

Re: Z510 battery goofing up

In response to customer reports of unexpected issues with battery performance on Z500 and Z510 laptops, Lenovo is making a battery firmware update available via download from the Lenovo Forums.

This battery firmware is intended to resolve the following unexpected charging symptoms when a Z500 or Z510 laptop is powered on:

  • Battery is dead
  • Battery is not detected
  • Battery is detected and charged to 100% but when AC power is removed, the laptop immediately powers off
  • When the battery is fully charged and AC power is removed, battery level falls dramatically within 10 minutes

Please note a step-by-step procedure for upgrading the firmware is included in the .zip file, found in the "ReadMe" folder.

The battery firmware update can be downloaded here: https://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/sm/z500_z510_battery_firmware_update.zip

hi bigbadfatman,

Can you consider running BatteryInfoView to get more information on the battery.

 - Sample image

If you see a wide gap between the Full Charged Capactity and the Designed Capacity then it's likely that one or more battery cells are wearing down (it maybe due to heat, daily use, or age). In this scenario, the battery cells loses the charge capacity faster than others cells -- which may explain fast battery charge / drain.

Batteries getting weak over time, I expect. Battery life going from 3+ hours to 5 minutes over 24 hours, I don't. The capacity is about 8wh less than the rated capacity. Hardly explains the 5 minute life.
