Z560, Speed of Expresscard-slot?

2011-01-25, 23:28 PM

hi!

Anyone knows how fast the Expresscard-slot is? I read that some manufacturers only support USB2.0-speed, so it´s not worth to use it with a 3.0-card

- adds usb3.0 ports to any laptop computer with an expressCard/34 slot
- connection bandwidth up to 5gbits per second (in usb 3.0 mode)

Hello!

"The host device supports both PCI Express and USB 2.0[3] connectivity through the ExpressCard slot; cards can be designed to use either mode"

Did it mean, it depend to the design of the card which mode is used?

i think so, yes.

but here's the situation, if your express card is 2.0, you can reach higher speeds.

is there any information about this issue on the user manual? have you checked?

Your computer comes with an ExpressCard/34 slot used for connecting
ExpressCard devices.

Note: Only use the ExpressCard/34 devices.

No further info about this slot

expresscard modules use serial (pci express and usb 2.0) data interfaces rather than the isa (16-bit pc card) or pci (cardbus) parallel bus interfaces, improving bus speed in data transfer while reducing the number of signals needed in the interface (2.5 gb/s [pci express] or 480 mb/s [usb 2.0] for the expresscard interface vs. 132 mb/s maximum theoretical throughput for the cardbus interface.) this translates to a more than 2.5x increase in speed when using an expresscard module utilizing pci express over a cardbus card, and a 40x increase over 16-bit pc cards.

Well, I know ;)

But this let me don´t really know how fast it is "(2.5 gb/s [pci express] or 480 mb/s [usb 2.0]"

you can use some 3rd party applications to check/test the speed.
