Z580 Smart Fan Noise Control -- I found the button but how does it work?

2013-03-06, 15:32 PM

I just bought a Z580 with Windows 8. It has a sticker Smart Fan Noise Control. My understanding is that this can be used to control fan speed. How? I can not find this in the manual. The button is the right most of five white labels below the lenovo insignia below the screen. So, the fan button (not really a button) is the one that looks like a plus sign with a quarter moon at the right. If I press it, it does the fan cleaning thing but how do I do the speeds?

I would like to try changing the fan speed because my fan makes a very slight pulsating sound. Otherwise I'm crazy about this computer. It has so many cool features and works well.

Re: Z580 Smart Fan Noise Control -- what/where is it?

I think you have to install the Win7 version of the power management software, as i think the Win8 version only has the "dusting option", when the Win7 version has "standard", "super silent" and "efficient thermal dissipation" , also the "dusting" option by pressing the touch sensitive, star and moon symbol.

Make a system restore point before changing anything.

Thanks John, for the reply. I found the button before I read your reply but when pressed, no menu of fan speeds comes up which is a fault of Windows 8, as you said.

I gather from an 18 page thread on this topic, that the thing is to use the Win 7 power management and run in compatability mode. I'm going to wait on this.

As John mentioned, be sure to set a systems restore point before doing all this.

Since my room temperature is very cool during the winter, I wanted to try the efficiency fan setting to see if the fan would be totally quiet, like on my last laptop. As it is, the laptop barely gets warm and I can only hear the pulsing of the fan from about a two feet away when the room is silent. So, it isn't noisy. I'm ging to wait for a patch.
