best way to make use of a 128GB SSD (not pre-installed from facroty)

2012-10-02, 11:09 AM

Hi Guys !

I have a Y580 500GB and I am adding a msata 128GB SSD for OS and important programs. I am utterly confused as to how to make the best of my 128GB SSD. I want to install only OS and large programs (CS5, Corel, Blender, Maya) on that SSD. and then use the HDD to install other programs.

I read that the cache thign only works with 64GB and below. So how do I make the best of the 128GB i have.

Should I use the SSD as a separate drive or use the combined SSD+HDD option ! Please advice ! Thanks.

Using ssd and hdd is the best option. Install os on it to get the best boot and startup time. You could also use only ssd. That will save a lot of battery which is consumed by the spinning Hdd.

Thanks Ishaan ! That make me think of another thing. If I use the SSD+HDD options, will the system fill out the SSD first and then use the HDD if i keep installing progrms (I intend not to use more than 60 % of the SSD for longer life)

When you install programs and applications on windows they get installed in the os drive. Even if you fill the whole drive then also the the application setup would guide you to install in the os drive. What i meant was that you would have to change the location manually. ;-)

In that case I do not c a benefit of using the HDD+ SSD option ! I can always keep the SSD independent and install programs I want on it and then divert the other non-critical applications manually onto the HDD.

But how would you install non critical apps on Hdd when you would use ssd independently? Correct me if i am wrong here. Cause it would be possible in ssd+hdd option.

Its possible to choose the drive when u install an application as far as I know. Yes some critical files for that application will still be installed on the C drive (SSD in our case) but i could use the D (HDD) for the rest ? I am not a pro either but thats what i have seen for applciaitons I installing on my current PC where I have two HDD and i install non-critical apps on the D rather than the C.

Thats what i said. That would be only possible in ssd +hdd combination if you mean idependently as only ssd installed and hdd taken out. If both drives are installed then it would be ssd+hdd

Please be aware that changing the harddrive will void your warranty. Even a monkey could replace/add a harddrive or memory, but Lenovo just takes every opportunity to avoid having to take any responsibility for their products.

@ishaan : Ok just a confusoin in terminology there ! When i mean SSD + HDD i mean the rapiddrive mode (http://78.9.150.202/pub/RapidDrive.pdf). I was thinking to install SSD as C and then HDD as D !
