Re: one key recover feature on a new drive.

So my Y500's HDD broke recently and I plan to get a new one. I plan to reinstall the OS on to the SSD it came with but I want to retain the One Key recovery feature. How do I go about doing something like that?

i don't think there is away to transfer all data there is something called recovery or rescue disk but it is not for free

and i don't know if it fixes the current os or reinstall the os on a new parition or new ssd

anyway if u didn't manage to fix that you could easily install microsoft win 10 for free from medica creation tool and it will activate automatially as key is saved in the bios

If you created an Image Backup of the full drive to an external HD. Simply restore it and it will also be back. If not and the original HD has failed you essential have NO BACKUP! Without one you lost it all and that is the point of a back externally. Not one via a built in tool on the same drive.

If it was a warranty replacement Lenovo should pre-image their drive to the machine oem for you or send recovery disk to rebuild the replacement drive. That you of course would have to discuss with them. As above installing the Win 10 same build type EG Home verse Professional you had should activate. But you have a lot of work updating drivers, tools, and Windows updates all of which will take an entire day.

I didn't create an image back up as an image back up would be very large and I don't have an external drive yet. As of now though, I can only get a new drive and reinstall Windows on it. I just don't know how I would get One Key recovery function to work on the new drive.

Well, now I've come to realize that I can't install the OS on the 16GB SSD it came with either because it's not "formatted as NTSF" whatever that means. I don't know what's already on it since it's not the full 16GB, but I'd reformat it into that format if I could.

Without an image you won't be able to create the original partitions and scheme you had. Depending on the OS you may be able to install it and have it activate. That would only work with Win10 if you had that running. No Lenovo partition or other would be there. Systems come with GPT typically but the SSD is likely something else being that small. Tech support may advise you. Likely just a cache drive only with that size.

To reconfigure with Win 10 tools, partitions and drivers as if new. You need to get the Reinstallation DVD from Lenovo. That is the only way. As well as the fasted to get up and running.
