y580 Hard Drive hitting 61 degrees celsius

2013-02-13, 6:29 AM

I just receive my y580 on Monday and I have been monitoring its temps while gaming.  Playing modern games in ultra with about 30-50fps my gpu isn't going above 70 and my cpu is between 70-75 during intense gaming sessions, which from what I have heard are pretty good temperatures.  The problem is that my hard drive is hitting 58-60, and then after a couple hours going between 60 and 61.

I have the 500gb 7200rpm version that has a working temp max of 60.  I need my odd so I cannot move my hdd to that bay, and I do not have the funds for an ssd, any advice for my hard drive, or should I not be too worried at the 60-61?

Bump, how normal is this, I've heard guys on other forums besides this say that they hit 60 after two hours of heavy performance gaming, do you guys watch your temps at all, do they hit this as well?  I'm not using a cooling pad btw, I just want to know how much I should worry about 61, is it that much worse than the limit of 60?  Because I'm pretty sure I wasn't going to hit 62.

Well if you are like me, you had 40-45 at idle so this isnt TOO  bad but it isnt a good thing...i recommend the coolermaster x2. I use it while playing minecraft and it keeps the hdd temp at 35-40 and other games it doesnt go above 50

I just checked and about 30 minutes after I'm done gaming I do idle between 40-45.

However, I breached a temp level that I never wanted to and I hit 62 degrees today o.O.

All the other temps are completely fine in my laptop though, I am playing on my lap though because the whole point of portable gaming for me is for me to use it in my bed while watching tv, I do not like sitting stiff at a desk.

Is it possible that something is making my hard drive work unnecessarily harder while gaming that is increasing its temps even further? Also, is there a recommended cooling pad that works well and its comfortable to use on your lap?

Thanks.

Hey, I too am worried about HDD Temps, though mines reaches around 48-50C with a nice Thermaltake 230mm cooling pad while CPU(65C-70C) and GPU(65C-70C too) are under pressure for about 30 minutes or more.

A possible solution I've read about is to ditch your optical drive and instead connect the HDD there.

Apparently it was someone's bright idea to stick the HDD of the Y580 right next to the GPU and CPU...

From what I heard moving the HDD to where the optical drive is will definitely lower temps but keep in mind two things.

1. You'll lose your warranty from what I know.

2. You won't have an optical drive in your laptop :-P

I hope this helps, I have yet to try it for myself but once I muster up the courage to void my warranty I'll give it a go.

(Whoops, forgot about that part you wrote that you need your optical drive..)
