2 DAYS AND IT BROKE. Lenovo IdeaPad Y580's Uncertain Service Time in Indonesia and Y580's Quality

2013-03-06, 14:04 PM

I bought this Y580 in Malaysia. My aunt, to be precise, who bought it about a month ago, while she went there with my grandparents for medical check-up. We weren't able to see each other (due to the fact that we live in different city) until 3 days after Chinese New Year, 17th February.

But after only used it for 2 DAYS (YES, TWO DAYS),

something's wrong with the screen. It turned blank. After going through some diagnoses finally I found out that the problem is on the screen, I don't know if it's only the wire or the screen panel. The technician didn't tell me.

Being extremely busy, I was only able to take it two days ago to the service center. But the technician said some things about the time of the repair, due to some problems Lenovo Indonesia suffered recently, like it's gonna take a long time to get it done

Fyi, this model isn't available in Indonesia so I immediately assume that it'll take a LONG TIME to repair, because they have to ship this sparepart from another country, I pressume, which will take a long time while I need it for my studies.

Why did I buy this thing in Malaysia instead of Indonesia ? I'm in Indonesia maybe only for 4 monthsand then I'll go to Malaysia for years and actually, this model comes with international warranty. I should have some peace in mind, right ? But the truth is now I'm panicking. And the irony is I only used it for 2 DAYS.

You may say that I'm impatient or what, but I'm being realistic here. I'm not sure that it'll be done in days. Even the technician himself said that it'll take a long time. And I also read recently that Lenovo Indonesia's service time is a kind of disappointing. What is wrong with you ? Seriously, brand new but only takes 2 days to broke ?

Don't blame me for buying a model that doesn't exist in my current country. It means I TRUSTED LENOVO TO LAST LONG ENOUGH (only for 4 months. too much to ask, eh ?) BUT... LENOVO FAILED ME. IN TWO DAYS

I also wasn't able to repair it ASAP at 20th February because I was so extremely busy with my final project. My only free day was only Sunday, when, unfortunately, all service centers are closed as well.

I'm studying Design and I'll enter the computer studies next week. Now do you have any idea how I need this to repaired ASAP?

I thought this thing inherits the legendary IBM quality. Sigh....

DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED.

I totally understand how you feel.

That said, give it a chance for it to be worked out. Sometimes life gives you lemons, this time it was Lenovo that gave you one.

Keep us posted though.

Still no response from Lenovo. Maybe they're right. Lenovo outside of ThinkPad sub-brand has bad after-sales service. No offense included but the truth included LOL

Come on, I only used it for two days and now it should be repaired for.. ummm, two weeks ? or even more. Just because a simple problem. Just because the screen or even the wire. Not mainboard my friend, not mainboard.

I had worse experience regarding laptop LCD panels on other brands, its not really a matter of Lenovo.

Consider that all those panels, on all OEM brands are being built by three, maybe four manufacturers. You have Samsung, LG, LG-Phillips even etc... They are manufactured at such mass scale, its a given some of those will fail either now or after.
It happened to me more than once the panel will go out week or a month after the common 1yr warranty expires and to say how pissed off I was on those mfgs when I got the reply that I should pay for a replacement (dearly) is an understatement.
Anyway, it isn't really Lenovo's fault, and you do have a warranty and you are using it and it will be repaired in due time.

Keep us posted on the progress!

Yeah, bad luck for us.. Update : The technician said that Lenovo Indonesia is having trouble with the Indonesian customs. Sigh. How come this is happening ? No spare parts and now the shipped spare parts are being held by the customs :| That doesn't mean my spare parts have arrived in Indonesia, though. It might be the previous ones which are being held by the customs.

Hi there,

Its just a sad thing that Indonesian Customs is holding on to Lenovo's stuff. Unfortunate that you got a machine which is one of the few bad ones. Usually the Ideapads are good machines and usually work out to  last well too.

Hopefully your customs situation clears up soon and you have a shiny new screen.

Cheers...

Ideapad Y 580
Core i7 3630, 8Gb 1600Mhz, 1TB HDD + 32GB mSata SSD, 1920x1080.... BDRW.....
Win 7 for now ......... till Lenovo gives us Rapid Drive on Win 8 ;-)

Actually, its pretty common to have such issues on customs. It might have been a bad day for the officer there or the shipment originator was requested to send some original documents over.

Hey, on the positive side, they are communicating and actually know what is going on.

Fingers crossed!

msahni : Yeah, I also did some browsing etc. to research if Lenovo is really a good brand (like I used to believe) and it turns out to be good. I hope this is the first and the last. I'm just having a bad luck here ( I wish )

@random_bit : I hope this problem has been worked out. This is quiet frustating. I don't know about other countries, but imo I think in here they take longer time to repair things such as notebooks. Pffft

I wonder how long it takes to replace Y580's display. Any experience, anyone ? So I could have a reference whether the repair is slow or fast
