Does Y580's Main HDD Bay and Optical Drive Bay Both Operate on SATA III / 6gb/s Speed ?

2013-10-14, 9:44 AM

Hello,

My SSD shows 6gb/s when inserted in the main bay but capped at 3gb/s when using hdd caddy (I checked it using intel rst software). I'm not sure if it's ODB or the caddy that's capping it.

Lenovo Y580
BIOS-5DCN40WW
Intel i7-3610QM, 8GB RAM
NVIDIA GTX660M 2GB
Win8boot/OS on Sandisk Extreme SSD 120GB, UEFI-GPT format
Users folder relocated to HDD caddy 1TB (occupying odd bay), MBR format

The specs for the caddy says SATA only. It could mean SATA I. But based on your statement that it can provide up 3 gb/s only that means SATA II. If you want 6 gb/s choose SATA III interface. Of course the unit's interface will also capped the speed so check the interface where you will place the caddy.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer but let me re-phrase my question,

"Of course the unit's interface will also capped the speed so check the interface where you will place the caddy."

- My unit is Y580

- HDD main bay supports 6gb/s

- Caddy will only fit in the optical drive bay

- SSD on caddy is capped at 3gb/s.

Given that caddy I purchased may only supports SATA1/SATA2 that's why I only get 3gb/s, my question still is does Y580's optical drive bay operate in SATA3 so if I can get a caddy that supports SATA3 then I can utilize the 6gb/s speed?

thanks

I get only 3Gbps on all 3: mSATA, internal bay and the caddy. Dunno why, but don't care. One of them is HDD, so I wouldn't be able to achieve those speeds anyway. I doubt 350MB/s and 500MB/s continuous data transfer rate would make noticable difference in real life

Hi,

mSATA port and main storage bay should support 6gb/s. I'm using SSD on my main bay and it dramatically helps on boot and application launch. You should try and fix your mSATA speed-- its worth it!

Did you do any tests that prove, that it does make a difference?

If you get a SATA III caddy it will still be operating at 3 gbps which is to be place in the optical bay (assuming the bay is rated at 3 gbps - must check this). That's what I mean by "Of course the unit's interface will also capped the speed so check the interface where you will place the caddy."
