Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

hi nepzie,

Welcome o Lenovo Community Forums!

The FN functions are being controlled by a software (Lenovo Energy/Power Management)

I suggest open you Control Panel / Programs and Features / uninstall a program and uninstall Lenovo Energy Management. and restart the system.

Now Download and install this Software choose what matches your Windows version

Lenovo Energy Management for 8 64-bit Windows
em8.08.0.2.4.exe
45.4MB

Lenovo Energy Management Windows 7 64/32 bit
cagt32ww.exe
21.3MB

Then try the Functions see if those works now

Best Regards

Solid Cruver

Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

Hi.

Thanks for the reply. I did what you said, although I had the latest software and driver already installed in my system. But it had no effect on the problem.

Can system recovery solve the problem? And will I lose all the data in system partityion if I use it?

I'm also a bit worried if the fn key is damaged physically. It just stopped working suddenly. And I cant find any keyboard tester software that supports Fn key.

Please help.

Thanks.

Also, when I hold the fn key and press another accompanying key, only the second key is registered. Example: If i press Fn+F5 to toggle airplane mode, only the f5 key is registered, i.e. refresh.

Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

hi nepziee,

If you're using Windows 8 Operating system then try Uninstalling the Lenovo energy Management and install the windows 7 Version

Lenovo Energy Management
cagt32ww.exe
21.3MB
Windows 7 32bit,
Windows 7 64bit

and try the Fn functions again.

It might be an issue with Windows 8 and Energy Management compatibility

If that step didn't work

I suggest you contact Lenovo Technical Support for assistance, might be the FN physical key issue.

If you don't have that amount of data on the system yet,  you can try doing a Windows Refresh or Onekey Recovery to rule out the Windows OS

Regards

Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

Hi Solid_Cruver.

I did install the earlier version of the driver. But, it didnt work. So, I installed the latest version again.

Then I restored the system using windows' system restore. But, even that didn't solve the problem. I however, did not use one key recovery as 90% of my hard disk is the system partition and I have a ton of important data.

Also I am unable to receive any physical support from Lenovo as I am halfway across the globe, in Nepal.

Is there any way I can check if it's a hardware issue myself?

Also, we dont have any authorised service support from Lenovo in my country, so taking it to a repair shop is my last option.

Thanks.

Nepzie

Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

Hi.

I guess I found out that it is not a hardware issue. When I press fn+f2 followed by the power button, it boots to the bios menu. I think this means that my fn key is physically ok.

Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

hi nepziee,

Have you tried doing it with only the F2 Key see if it will pull the BIOs as well?

For older models not sure for this one but Tapping F2 only while booting up pulls up the BIOS Screen

Let me know your findings

Thanks

Solid Cruver

Hi Solid_Cruver.

You were right. Only pressing f2 also takes it to BIOS. I was so excited that I forgot that part. haha. Smiley Happy

Re: FN Keys stopped working - ideapad y400

hi,

If your were able to check Lenovo Energy Management software the 7 version and the 8, this might be an issue with the Physical Fn key,

If you don't have that amount of documents on the system, You can try the One key recovery to have the system reverted back to factory settings(data loss) . this will rule out if it is hardware if the problem still exist with factory settings.

You can look at this support line numbers as to where it might be convenient for you to have it serviced,

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/feedback/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76613

or you can also bring the system to a local Repair shop there in your location to have the keyboard checked.

As an additional info here is the Maintenance Manual of your system. This will show you a disassembly guide of your PC together with the keyboard part number

Best Regards
