Re: GPU upgrade in Y460 - how to

One more comparison: eGPU vs the same GPU in desktop setup:

3Dmark06 eGPU - 15974

Default 3Dmark06 - 16518

3Dmark11 eGPU - P3754

Default 3Dmark11 - P4084

As you can see it is under 10%, I was really afraid that laptop slow PCI-e (x1.1Opt, compared to x16 in desktop) will cut performance over 20%.

Re: GPU upgrade in Y460 - how to

Hey,

I'm don't want to come off sounding rude, but people are asking for a tutorial, not benchmarking results.

yes those benchmarking results look great, but all of us would like to run some benchmarks as well...so even some pics of how you set it up would be better than just one teaser shot lol

Re: GPU upgrade in Y460 - how to

Ok, so here it is:

What you need to build your external GPU system for lenovo laptop:

1. External PCI-express socket you will connect to your laptop:
- PE4H ver2.4 with EC2C (around $100)

2. Software to manage your eGPU configuration
- Setup 1.x (around $25)

3. Power supply
- I got 400W for mine GTX 560 TI OC (around $50)

4. Graphics card
- Preffered NVidia due to Optiomus technology - it uses your intel integrated GPU for phisics calculations as well as it compress data between motherboard and eGPU - it boosts your setup performance

All cables you may need are included
- board power supply - included in PE4H, as well as it should be on your power supply
- GPU power supply - included 2x 6 pin cables (it was in my package) as well as I have 1 8pin and 1 4pin cables in my power supply

Getting started:
1. Dispable your internal laptop GPU, and boot only on integrated intel GPU
2. Connect your setup to your laptop via PCI-e Card - windows should detect it and install basic drivers
3. Install Nvidia drivers (if you want to use eGPU on your laptop internal screen you need custom drivers loated on http://forum.notebookreview.com/6542661-post1222.html) otherwise, you can use default ones.
4. Install Setup 1.x
5. Reboot into setup 1.x (after Setup 1.x is installed you will have dual boot mode enabled automatically)
6. Configure your setup and chainload to Windows
7. Enjoy your eGPU

Remarks:

- tested using nVidia eGPU using ntegrated intel GPU and disabled dGPU

- on Windows 7 x64

- laptop internal screen works, but performance is not as good ad using external display due to PCI-e transfer limitation

Re: GPU upgrade in Y460 - how to

Can you give a "how to" guide on getting the eGPU to display on the internal laptop screen? Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: GPU upgrade in Y460 - how to

You just need to change one file in the nVidia driver package, details on: http://forum.notebookreview.com/e-gpu-external-graphics-discussion/418851-diy-egpu-experiences.html
