Has anyone upgraded Z70-80 to Windows 10 x64?

Good morning everyone! I've contacted Lenovo Support directly, asking if the Z70-80 is certified to run Windows 10. As yet, I have received no answer.

I backed up my system, created recovery media, and downloaded updated drivers from the support pages, but I still haven't gone through with the upgrade. I am doing volunteer work in the highlands of Peru, supporting myself as a freelance writer, which makes my laptop my only connection with the outside world. I can't afford to brick my machine on an optional major upgrade.

Has anyone upgraded their Z70-80 to WIndows 10 x64? If so, what were your results? Did you run into any problems? I'm not particularly worried about my current data, settings, or programs, as long as the machine works and I can put everything back on it.

For now, I'm sticking with WIndows 8.1 x64, the stock OS. I suppose that, when I get back to the states, in about year, I'll have a new machine anyway. There's really no rush to upgrade, anyway. Thanks for your input.

Re: Has anyone upgraded Z70-80 to Windows 10 x64?

I have been wondering as well. I look at the drivers availability and threads but virtually nothing on this model we have. Even a post on the 81 bios when unanswered. Many of the driver for other platforms seem beta grade and buggy requiring updating. I don't want to go through that.

What did you create your backup image with? I recent used the free Paragon Backup creating it to an external USB 3.0 drive but the Boot CD won't boot. I have not popup for boot selection tapping the F12 or F10 keys as previous notebooks had to select the CD as the boot device.

I like you want to have everything foreseeable addressed before making the move along with a quick reverse solution.

Re: Has anyone upgraded Z70-80 to Windows 10 x64?

I agree, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of activity for the Z70-80, which has been an awesome machine for me. I'm surprised that more people aren't talking about it. (I switched from HP ProBook, for goodness' sake! Ha!)

Anyway, with regard to my backup steps, I did "Create a Recovery Drive" with "Copy Recovery Partition to Recovery Drive" checked, on a 16 GB USB drive. I downloaded all Windows 10 x64 Home drivers, and copied them to a 4 GB USB drive. I also burned Windows 10 x64 Home Setup (I can't rememeber my exact steps for that) to a DVD-R, using the instructions on this page and this page.

To change boot order, you have to cold boot the laptop using the Lenovo OneKeyRecovery button, that tiny button next to the power socket. You might have to use a pen or something pointy to press it, for 1 or 3 seconds, I don't recall. Then you can select "Boot Menu," where you should will have the option to select your USB or CD/DVD drive to boot from. I could be wrong on this.

In spite of this preparation, I'm still waiting for others to give me some feedback on their results. Feedback from Lenovo would be even better, but I'm not holding my breath. Sorry I couldn't be any more helpful.

Re: Has anyone upgraded Z70-80 to Windows 10 x64?

I have never used the NOVO button yet but whether the backup restoration works when Win10 is on is unclear. I have heard too many horror stories over the decades people relying on Windows Backup from MS and once they attempt to restore it isn't any good or won't run. I alway used an independant stand along back product. Mostly Acronis Trueimage but they allow installation for only one machine now. So I can't use it now.

Trouble with this system is it won't boot from CD and I don't want to really have meddle with BIOS setting each time. It should be a default capability!!! I certain its because of the UFIE setup and I know people have been locked out of there bios on the T520 switching it to UFIE and not being able to boot their machines again or get back in the BIOS. I am not sure why but left mine as the factory default setting for that.

Max, thanks for chiming in! When you did your upgrade, exactly what steps did you take? Did you just click the Windows 10 popup and let it run?

Re: Has anyone upgraded Z70-80 to Windows 10 x64?

Ahh, that's the tool I used to create the Windows 10 x64 Setup DVD. I forgot about that. Did you burn it to a DVD or just hit "Upgrade this PC Now" ?

(Sorry for all the questions. This is just really touchy for me.)
