I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580, and I want it to last as long as possible

2016-05-11, 23:37 PM

As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?

TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

Hi Arceneaux ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There would be a lot of recommendations that are simply general in nature such as this and this .

Limiting applications running at the same time would help aside from usual clean boot mode and on the hardware internal devices like heatsinks and fan , maintaining the vents free from obstructions by cleaning with comprssed air.

For you specific model , follow the tips indicated in your users guide (page 20)and maintainance manual is a plus.

Running diagnostics would help you isolate the slow performance current on the laptop and to know your laptop better.

Main thing here to give concern to all mobile device is accumulated heat ( ex battery that may accumulate additional heat after 100 % ) which power saving is ideal to monitor since these are compacted and does not have a lot on ventillaton unlike desktops.

Lastly the challenge here amongst gamers is to resist prolonged usage on heavy loads. Can you resist playing more than 2-3 hours giving it some time out ? Using portable browsers with less add ons too is advised.

Hope this help answering your query.
