I yanked out the ethernet cable from the ethernet port, can I do something? Y570

2017-02-23, 0:45 AM

Stupid me...

I was walking away from my Lenovo y570 and the ethernet cable got caught up around my leg, so I yanked it out of the PC. The metal thingy was busted so I pushed it back and put it in place with a pair of toothpicks. However, the ethernet cable goes out just enough to disconnect me. Can I buy only that metal part, if that's in fact the issue why my cable goes out just a little? I saw just a litle plastic thing that broke off too, is that the thing that keeps the cable locked (can I improvise and how)?
My job is on the internet, so it brings the food on my table, please dear people, tell me if there's anything I can do? (HELP)

Cheapest way is either to buy a used motherboard or Y570 on ebay and use it to repair yours. Or you can simply try to find the port, unsolder the old one and solder the new one. Which is tricky if you don't have the experience.

They can be soldered only if you can get the right part and have a good rework station and the skill to use it.  If it were mine, I would buy a cheap USB ethernet dongle and disable the existing port in the device manager.  I am not recommending a particular seller or device, but something like this would work:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Belkin-USB-2-0-Ethernet-Adapter-for-PC-Ultrabook-MAC-/172507641599?hash=item282a41b6ff:g:dQwAAOSwA3dYj0MO

I would confirm with the seller that the device is compatible with windows 10 644-bit or whatever OS you are running.

Also make sure you set some money aside for a new machine in case this one dies. If this machine brings you money on the table, you may want to have some set aside for emergencies.

PS: You can always get used ThinkPads for cheap on the internet. An i5 from 2012-2013 could go for 75$, which is probably 3 times more than paying for a dongle or the same amount as if you were to fix the port.

Take care!
