IdeaPad Z710 F4 / F5 Fn key problem

I've found a few people with the same issue, but still no resolution - I'm using a Lenovo IdeaPad Z710 with a fresh reinstallation of Windows 7 Home Premium, and the F4 and F5 hotkeys work to close the window and refresh the page, respectively, even if the Fn key is not held down. I've been through attempting to change the hotkey function in the BIOS, but that doesn't make a difference - enabled or disabled, the F4 and F5 keys act as hotkeys. There doesn't seem to be any applicable driver listed on the Lenovo support site that would rectify this, and I've installed most, if not all, of the Windows 7 drivers.

I just spent 2 hours on hold with Lenovo support, only to be disconnected, and the only options I got when I called back were to reinstall the touchpad driver (which doesn't work) or go back to Windows 8. However, other people who have posted to the forum said they have had the same issue with 8/8.1.

Does anyone have any information concerning this issue?

Thank you!

Re: IdeaPad Z710 F4 / F5 Fn key problem

I've also tested this by booting into an Ubuntu live CD - does the same thing. It has to be a hardware issue - really hoping there's the possibility of a BIOS update rollout to correct this, as the alternative would be to return the laptop.

You should install Windows 8 also and if the issue persist then call back the Lenovo support and ask for service.

Re: IdeaPad Z710 F4 / F5 Fn key problem

Hi,
found the same problem on my machine. Working with
Visual Studio and used to stepping through the errors by
pressing F4 it's annoying to leave the developer studio
every time.
My idea was to check, which keys are submitted to the system
when F4 ist pressed.
I took the old example of keylook from the programming guide
from Charles Paetzold.
Then i pressed a, b, c, F1, F2, F3, F4 and boom!

Every Key sends a keydown and a corresponding keyup.
with the same keycodes and scancodes.
Same ky, same scancode.
But F4 sends a syskeydown and syskeyup.
And the keycodes and scaancodes are different.

Maybe this helps a bit.

Re: IdeaPad Z710 F4 / F5 Fn key problem

Hi again,

my posting was a bit confusing - to put it politely.

Message        Key Char Repeat Scan Ext ALT Prev Tran
WM_SYSKEYDOWN   18           1   56  No Yes   Up Down
WM_SYSKEYDOWN  115           1   62  No Yes   Up Down

Of cause there were two WM_SYSKEYDOWN Messages.
One for the Alt-Key and one for the F4.
But as mentioned before only F4 was pressed,

Best regards from aachen, germany,

Re: IdeaPad Z710 F4 / F5 Fn key problem

I have the same issue - I'm also affected by this bug. Other Lenovo models (also affected by this bug) got new BIOS updates to correct the problem, but as far as I know there isn't a solution for Z710 yet. However, I need a solution. My computer is brand new, and a defective keyboard is not something I will accept.
