Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

I have had this for 2 weeks and just in the past few days I have experienced random crashes. It is a Lenovo Ideapad Y400 with Windows 8 (64 bit). Suddenly I was having some BSOD issues (unexpected kernal mode trap, etc) so I decided to uninstall McAfee since that is notoriously buggy (I was not actually USING it, I had Avast installed). This seemed to fix it for a few days then I was getting BSOD along with random shut downs (no error messages, just completely powered down). SOmetimes I can get the computer to work for 30 mins and sometimes it will just power down almost as soon as it starts to boot up. I also tried uninstalling Avast, but that did not fix anything.

When I run into this issue, I am not doing anything graphics intense- no gaming, no video.

Was there a driver or Windows update that messed everything up? SHould I do a system restore/refresh? Below is the link to the event log and minidump files. Thanks!

Re: Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

hi there,

win32k.sys file caused the bsod. i've found out that one of the microsoft update may cause the problem.

the issue may be an incompatibility between the win32k.sys from kb2779030, which is a recent windows update, and a driver on the affected systems.

can you please check if you've installed this fix?

Re: Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

Hi Thank you for the response. I will check in a few hours when I am home. However, I recieved my laptop on Jan 10 and I've allowed Windows to install updates automatically so I assume that update was installed. I don't know if it is a coincidence, but some of the issues began after I installed an update on Jan 25th (I do not know the release date of the update). You mentioned that this error could cause the BSOD, but would it also cause the sudden shut downs?

As I said before, thanks, and I will respond again in a few hours!

Re: Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

Hi yigit,

I did a system restore to a point before Sunday (when I did Windows Update). The computer seems to be booting correctly now. I looked at past updates and did not see the kb2779030 update that you had mentioned.

I have only had the laptop rebooted from the restore point for about 5 minutes so I will see if the sudden shut downs occur still.

Before I did the restore, I encountered the error of driver_irql_not_less_or_equal. This has not happened again... yet haha

Re: Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

Still experiencing some crashes (no blue screens) so I am attempting a refresh of Windows 8. If this doesn't work, I am getting a refund or replacement.

Re: Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

Yep, I disabled automatic installation of Updates and refreshed WIndows but still get shut down. I think it must be a hardware issue. I'm going to try to get a replacement. Thanks

Re: Ideapad Y400 sudden crashes shut down

Uninstall avast or try the patch in the avast forum for windows 8. I had problems after installing avast.

And we're back...

Move delayed but still coming
