Ideapad Y470: problems with nVidia GT 550m GPU

I have an Ideapad Y470 with its original nVidia GT 550m GPU (as well as Intel Integrated graphics) and Windows 7 Home Premium. It is just over a year old. It's been running fine, though I had noticed some overheating when running graphics-intensive applications like new games.

A few days ago I had some bluescreens when using graphics-intensive applications. I then noticed those applications' performance was degraded. When I tried to adjust the graphics settings within the applications, I found that I did not have the option to use the nVidia GPU and could only use the Integrated graphics. The nVidia application for adjusting 3D settings was not present.

Device Manager showed that the nVidia GPU was Code 43. I tried updating the nVidia drivers and application from the nVidia website but this did not fix the problem. The drivers and application would install but Code 43 persisted and the application said no display was connected to an nVidia GPU. I uninstalled and reinstalled the nVidia GPU and was still Code 43.

I made a service call to Lenovo (I am still under warranty) and Lenovo fixed the problem by uninstalling the nVidia GPU and reverting to the drivers that shipped with the computer (not the newer drivers on the nVidia website). I had not done this and sure enough it cleared up the Code 43 issue. The Lenovo technician said that it was probably a driver incompatibility issue cause by the new nVidia drivers not working with my laptop. This did not fit the chronology (I had the Code 43 THEN installed the new drivers as an attempted fix) but I was just glad to have the Code 43 cleared up. Also, I am not completely certain what my driver set was at the time of the crash.

After the call, however, I noticed that no applications would offer the nVidia GPU as an option. Furthermore, when I used the graphics adjustment application that came with the original drivers, any attempt to use the nVidia GPU--for example, to put up a demo graphic to adjust 3D settings--would result in a bluescreen. I also used the nVidia application to force other applications to use the nVidia GPU and got a bluescreen. I don't have a Code 43 yet, but this is just as bad since, despite Device Manager saying it is working properly, I can't actually use the nVidia GPU for anything.

I've since reproduced the Lenovo technician's work a few times with the same result: Device Manager says the nVidia GPU is there but I can't actually use it. If I do, bluescreen.

I am still under warranty so am planning to call again; however, does anyone have any idea what further diagnostics I can run? I am concerned this may be an actual hardware problem.

Re: Ideapad Y470: problems with nVidia GT 550m GPU

If you can find the 310.70 drivers, try installing that. I am currently using that driver version and I haven't had a bluescreen yet. Just don't let the GPU reach above 85 degrees when gaming and you should be fine.
