I think I have Synaptics then as I have gesture functions available. Still living with the same problem. Then it's like the issue is nothing to do with Elan or Synaptics as people with both touchpads have the same problem.

That is definitely an interesting development then.  So, regardless of Elan or Synaptics touchpad, the keyboard issue exists.  This is a separate issue completely.  Either that or both touchpads are causing interference with the keyboard.  So, can you hit the 6 key on the numpad continuously (not holding the button down but keep hitting it) and tell me if you get a few "`" in between the 6's?  The solution is still the same for me though.  I put some electrical tape on the touchpad in the vicinity of this capacitor on the motherboard and it almost stopped the keyboard issue completely.  I have not had it throw in extra characters while typing on the keyboard, just the issue with the numpad which I will accept if that is as bad as it's going to get.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what I got when hitting 6 in a notepad.
"66666666666666`666666666666666666666666666666666666`66666666666666666666666666`66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666`6`+6`+666666666`666"
I hope my condition is still worse as it opened help screen a couple of times too.

Thanks for checking on that for me.  So, we have basically the exact symptoms down to the characters that it throws out.  I hope this can be fixed with a simple bios update, no holding my breath though.  Yeah, mine was like that, opening the help screen and all that other fun stuff.  It's much better now with the electrical tape but I still avoid the numpad.

One last thing, what verison bios are you running?  I know that a lot of the Y500s with the Synaptics touchpad is running v1.05.  I'm on v1.03, trying to see if it is worth an upgrade.

Is there a BIOS update  v1.05 available for the Y500 ?

No unfortunately it has not been released to the public.

Re: Ideapad Y500 keyboard problems

I was able to get rid of the keyboard problem for couple of days now, not sure when will it pop up again.

I did the following.

1. Removed the battery and plugged it in after few minutes (approx 5 min).

2. Never turned the keyboard backlit light on.

3. As everyone mentioned Always ON USB is diabled in BIOS.

Will keep posted if I get the issue back.

When you say you were able to get rid of the keyboard problem, do you mean completely?  Meaning, you can now push on the 6 key without it throwing a ` out?

Just to keep the board posted that I have never faced the issue since I have removed the battery and placed it back. :-)

Re: Ideapad Y500 keyboard problems

I had the same issue after I sent it back because of ELAN touchpad issues, and got beack with Synaptics touchpad.
I didn't want to send it back again for a couple of weeks, so I took a closer look to the problem.

THE PROBLEM:
The bottom of the keyboard made from aluminum, and it touches the heat sink of the second videocard in the UltraBay. ( If the keyboard works without the 2. videocard you have the same issue.)

THE SOLUTION:
(You don't have to disassemble the notebook!)
1. Pull out the ultra bay.
2. Put electrical tape or any insulation between those two metal surface. I suggest to stick it to the keyboard, not to the heat sink.
3. Done Smiley Very Happy
Hope it helps!

Re: Ideapad Y500 keyboard problems

Hello everyone,

I bought my Y500 around X-mas and started having trouble with the ELAN touchpad going crazy (see my post on the touchpad thread). I had the touchpad replaced for a Synaptics which solved the problem. After that I discovered the "USB Always ON" function and thought it would be useful so enabled it in the bios. After that the keyboard started to give issues: touching the 6 on the numeric keyboard repeatedly would give 6666666`6666`. Pressing 4s and 7s would insert random spaces. Also when touching Q and A simultaneously or WS simultaneously (which can happen if you type fast using 10 fingers) would insert strings of characters like r-uiop or zx. Also the machine would hang 10 seconds before I could remove these unwanted characters. Very annoying. Fortunately I found this thread with some useful posts. I disabled USB Always ON in the bios, which initially didn't solve the problem until I removed and re-installed the battery. Thanks for that tip. This solved the problems for 99%. Now I still have an ocasional ` when I type hit the 6 on the numeric keyboard many times:

 666666666666666666666666666666666666666`666666

however, I actualy never have to do that, still it annoys me knowing that the problem is not 100% solved. I would like to try the tape solution the previous poster describes. However, in the ultrabay I only have a DVD-drive, and I have no idea where I should put the tape and if there could be any negative side-effects.

Any suggestions?

Bye, Rob
