I think Elan is the term used for the driver but not sure. Even I have the notification Icon stating Synaptics Poiting device. Is there any differentiation between Elan and Synaptics ?

Elantech and Synaptics are both manufacturer of touchpads found in the Y500. The eariler models came with the Elan touchpad, the newer ones came with Synaptics. You can install Synaptics drivers onto a laptop equipped with an Elan touchpad, however, those will be generic drivers and you will not have any advanced functions, ie. gestures. The way to differentiate between the two is by checking the Synaptics control panel. If you have gestures and other options in there then you have the Synaptics touchpad. If you only have generic functions available then you are running Synaptics drivers on an Elantech touchpad. Hope this clears it up for you.

I think I have Synaptics then as I have gesture functions available. Still living with the same problem. Then it's like the issue is nothing to do with Elan or Synaptics as people with both touchpads have the same problem.

That is definitely an interesting development then. So, regardless of Elan or Synaptics touchpad, the keyboard issue exists. This is a separate issue completely. Either that or both touchpads are causing interference with the keyboard. So, can you hit the 6 key on the numpad continuously (not holding the button down but keep hitting it) and tell me if you get a few "`" in between the 6's? The solution is still the same for me though. I put some electrical tape on the touchpad in the vicinity of this capacitor on the motherboard and it almost stopped the keyboard issue completely. I have not had it throw in extra characters while typing on the keyboard, just the issue with the numpad which I will accept if that is as bad as it's going to get.

This is what I got when hitting 6 in a notepad.
"66666666666666`666666666666666666666666666666666666`66666666666666666666666666`66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666`6`+6`+666666666`666"
I hope my condition is still worse as it opened help screen a couple of times too.

check in your BIOS to see if your Always ON usb is enabled. Disable it and see if you have any more keyboard problems. Yet another advertised feature on the y500 that, for me, is unusable because my keyboard acts up even MORE when it's enabled.

Thanks for checking on that for me. So, we have basically the exact symptoms down to the characters that it throws out. I hope this can be fixed with a simple bios update, no holding my breath though. Yeah, mine was like that, opening the help screen and all that other fun stuff. It's much better now with the electrical tape but I still avoid the numpad.
One last thing, what verison bios are you running? I know that a lot of the Y500s with the Synaptics touchpad is running v1.05. I'm on v1.03, trying to see if it is worth an upgrade.

Is there a BIOS update v1.05 available for the Y500 ?
