Re: Ideapad Y710 CD/DVD Drive Missing After Linux Install

I would appreciate any advice on thse topics:

-Setting up Splashy with Lilo (Usplash doesn't work)

- Setting up hibernation

-Headphones not muting speakers automatically, have to be done manually via the Mixer

-AlsaMixer not saving mixer settings...

Those are small anoyiences but everything else works perfect with Ubuntu...

Thank you in advance...

Re: Ideapad Y710 CD/DVD Drive Missing After Linux Install

All,

I recently installed Ubuntu as the only OS on my Ideapad Y710 (thus demonstrating my hatred of Vista).  I would like to implement your Lilo solution so that my CDROM drive will again be available in the OS.  I am abit timid about uninstalling GRUB and when running the liloconfig it comes back with this:

WARNING!

Your /etc/fstab configuration file gives device                           │
UUID=d1670228-1cd3-4269-b25e-97dfee4cee7b as the root filesystem device.

This doesn't look to me like an "ordinary" block device. Either your

fstab is broken and you should fix it, or you are using hardware (such

as a RAID array) which this simple configuration program does not

handle.

You should either repair the situation or hand-roll your own

/etc/lilo.conf configuration file; you can then run /usr/sbin/liloconfig

again to retry the configuration process. Documentation for LILO can be

found in /usr/share/doc/lilo/.

How do I resolve this?  I am a old Windows DOS fellow and am diving into Ubuntu, newly, but diving.

Thanks,

Pat

Re: Ideapad Y710 CD/DVD Drive Missing After Linux Install

Good day Crazylife,

Hopefully I'm not too late to help you...

I actually recommend using both GRUB and LILO on the Y710, specifically because GRUB will update itself every time you download a new kernel, and LILO you have to update manually.

Install GRUB to the MBR (or to a separate /boot partition like i did, since i use the Vista bootloader on the MBR).  When you set up LILO, don't let it rewrite the MBR, and it will install itself on the / partition.

To fix your /etc/fstab, you just have to list the locations as you'd find them in gparted.  So, instead of:

UUID=(blah blah blah)

Just change it to:

/dev/sda1 (or whatever location it is)

I found it handy to just comment out the line with the UUID in it, just in case i need it later.  So on mine, an entry looks like this:

# / was on /dev/sdb1 during installation

# UUID=(blah blah blah)     /       ext3     relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

/dev/sdb1   /   ext3  relatime,errors=remount-ro  0 1

So, on my setup, i have the Vista bootloader point to the /boot partition in order to boot with GRUB, and the / partition in order to boot LILO.  LILO takes longer to boot, and i can use my optical drive.  GRUB is more of a Plan B in case something goes wrong.

Re: Ideapad Y710 CD/DVD Drive Missing After Linux Install

Hello everybody,

I have made a lot of tests which show the following

1) each time that mbr is changed by any utilitiy DVD disappear  so vista MBR is absolutly needed to see DVD

2) on mixed configuration: linux (any) installed on another partition, grub installed in linux partition, linux entry added in bootmgr menu with esaybcd   DVD does not appears

So conclusions are

1) vista mbr code contains needed instructions to detect DVD

2) grub boot code reset this  and dvd dispappear

3) adding acpi=off in linux kernel line seems solve this issue but it is a very bad solution for battery life

I have one question

is this problem specific to lenovo hardware or specific to sata ahci dvd ?

Best regards
