Ideapad Z500 ELAN mouse pad not working

Hi, it appears that the elan mouse pad on my ideapad Z500 is not working. The only way I can use it is by plugging in an external mouse via USB.

I've tried restarting the laptop several times but doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

Please advise?

Re: Ideapad Z500 ELAN mouse pad not working

hi chazchenko,

Welcome to the Forums.

You didn't mention the OS that you're using but if the machine came preloaded with Windows 8, can you try the following:

1. Press the Windows key‌ Windows logo key+R and type devmgmt.msc. On the Device Manager, navigate to the Mice and other pointing devices and ensure that the ELAN touchpad is present and is not disabled (uninstall it if necessary to refresh the device). Also, check if the Rollback Driver is clickable to isolate a faulty driver.

2. Hold the Shift key while doing a restart to boot into the Advanced Startup Options or press the OneKey Recovery button while the computer is turned off to boot into the System Recovery Options and from here, check if the internal mouse if it's working.

If the touchpad still doesn't work then there's likely an imminent failure on the touchpad. If you're no longer in warranty, you can try to open it up and remove and reinsert the Touchpad cable inplace and observe.

Guide:

Z500 Video Disassembly (see Keyboard removal)

If you're still under warranty then I recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk for service.

Hi Neokenchi,

I was using windows 8 before, but made the unfortunate mistake of updating it to windows 10. Please advise accordingly.

Thanks,

Chaz

Re: Ideapad Z500 ELAN mouse pad not working

hi,

If you're running on Windows 10, try these steps:

1. Press the Windows key‌ Windows logo key+X and choose Device Manager. On the list of devices, navigate to the Mice and other pointing devices and uninstall the Touchpad driver (it should say Lenovo pointing device or similar) then reboot.

2. Press the Windows key‌ Windows logo key+X and choose Programs and FeaturesOn the list of apps, uninstall anything that relates to ELAN or ELAN Touchpad then reboot and observe if the Touchpad is now functional.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards
