Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

A few days ago I purchased a 2nd hand Ideapad Z500 (build date is 2013 and it's the i5 model) and I have unfortunately came across a problem, when i recieved the laptop i had to reset back to factory settings once reset and i got into windows and after installing all the drivers that needed installing i noticed in device manager there was no nividia graphics card only the intel hd 4000.

I have downloaded the Intel Graphic drivers from Lenovo's support website which installed ok. However, if I try to install the NVidia driver it says "Graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware" I tried the newest driver and some old drivers and also the driver from Lenovo website but I couldn't install it. As i said above there is nothing about NVidia in the Device Manager. It only shows Intel graphic card. i installed AIDA64 and GPU-Z and again they only show only Intel, they cannot see NVidia either. So after much reading on the this support forum I updated the bios to the newest version, v1.21 but nothing changed, also from what i can make out from the forum reading i have done there should be a setting in the BIOS called "Graphic Setting" which needs to be set to "Switchable" well that option is not there so i don't know if the problem is the bios or the motherboard.

So i am not sure if this is a Hardware problem or software anyway i am going to try another recovery and see if that sorts it. So any help or advice would be most appreciated.

My Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 Is With This Configration: Intel i5 3230m 2.6 ghz, ram 6gb, hdd 1 TB, nvidia geforce 735m 2 gb, Model Name:20202.

Re: Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

Try installing/reinstalling the chipset driver first. Reboot and then try installing the Nvidia driver/software.

Re: Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

I have reinstalled the chipset, reinstalled the Intel graphics driver and tried to install different versions of the nividia drivers all to no avail. I'm totally at a loss here.

The guy i bought it from assures me all was working for him before he sent it so i don't get why it's now not working 2 days later. what perplexes me is there is no graphics option in the BIOS.

From what i understand If the motherboard supports switchable graphics, the BIOS will show the following settings under the configuration tab and i dont have that option in my BIOS.

So even though i am being told it does have switchable graphics i am beginning to wonder if it does have a discrete GPU at all as it should not be this hard to get it enabled.

Would i be correct in saying  that once you install the motherboard chipset and if the bios supports the graphics switching feature the above option would then be available in the BIOS?

Is there a way to find the spec of a machine via Lenovo? I am beginning to wonder if it really does have a Nividia card.

Answer: NO. The bios must first be set to switchable graphics. The unit must have a defective discrete graphics card.

Answer: You can try looking at the hardware maintenance manual.

Re: Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

Still no further forward with this, I have looked at the hardware maintenance manual and from what i can tell this model does have/should have a discrete gpu. There are models that only have the intergrated gpu's but this model is not one of them.

So the perplexing thing is why there is no 'Graphics Menu' in the BIOS?. If i take the back cover off the laptop would i be able to see the nvidia chip without having to take the whole thing to apart?.

Begining to think i have been sold a lemon, If the discrete gpu is faulty would it be a costly repair? I really need advice/suggestions on where i should go from here.

Try resetting the BIOS to default settings? A BIOS update?

Re: Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

Thanks for the suggestion but i tried that i also updated the bios to the latest which is v1.21, i'm not sure if maybe rolling back the bios to the original factory version would help not even sure if it's possible to do on this brand of laptop.

Re: Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

Not sure then.

Maybe pull the CMOS battery and let it sit overnight unpowered?

I don't even see a CMOS battery referenced in the HMM though:

Since you are sure that the unit has the discrete graphics card but the bios cannot detect it, I think your best move now is to return the unit. The graphics card cannot be replaced or repaired since it is soldered on the MB.

You can't roll back the bios to an older version unless you made a backup copy of it before updating to 1.21 (this is the only version available for download at the site).

Re: Ideapad Z500 Switchable graphics

As a last check, try a Linux LiveCD and see if you can pick up the NVIDIA GPU. Try multiple reboots to see if you can trip the Optimus autodetect in BIOS (if there is one).
