Ideapad Z580 Nvidia GT635M graphics problem (windows 8)

2013-01-03, 16:49 PM

Hey guys,

I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Z580 in December, and ever since I have received it, I have not been able to utilize the Nvidia GeForce GT635M graphics included with the laptop.

My laptop has Windows 8 64 bit included. I reinstalled the drivers from the Lenovo website (even tried the Chinese website as I read some people have better luck with their drivers). I installed the chipset, then intel hd drivers, and finally the NVidia.

I can open the Nvidia control panel, and set preferences to use the Nvidia card. However, no application will actually use the Nvidia card. Every benchmark is using the HD4000 intel graphics, and some games in which I can choose the graphics within the game only show the Intel graphics.

I have set the power plan settings to high performance, and every other setting that I can think will affect it, with no success.

Is this simply because there are no compatible switchable graphics drivers with Windows 8 as of yet?  Just trying to make sense of this as I bought the laptop for light computer gaming, and cannot use the integrated card at all.

hi AutoXMan,

If you installed the Intel driver first then installed the Nvidia Drivers from the lenovo support site, try to do the following:

1. Download & install Heavy Load (free stress test utility to test the GPU & CPU)

2. Download & install GPU Shark (GPU Monitoring Tool)

3. Set the Power Settings to High Performance

4. Open Heavy Load to use with the Nvidia Graphics (right click > run with Graphics Processor) and configure application to stress test CPU and GPU. (we set CPU stress test also because NVIDIA Optimus kicks-in if the CPU load is above 50%)

5. Run GPU Shark and monitor your GPU usage

If the GPU usage goes above 3%. that means NVIDIA Optimus is working, otherwise you might want to check this thread.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Tested with IdeaPad U410 running Intel HD Graphics 4000 / NVIDIA GeForce 610M

hi AutoXMan,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

I just want to verify if you have also checked the BIOS to see if the Graphic Device is set to Optimus.

optimus.JPG

Not sure if it's a glitch with the driver though but if you have installed the following, graphics switching between the onboard and discrete graphics should work.

Nvidia Optimus VGA Driver                   Intel VGA driver_64bit
0mvj09w8_64.exe                                  0mvg11w8_64.exe
196MB                                                      80.7MB

Hope this helps.

Hello neokenchi,

Thank you for your help. My BIOS is set to Optimus.

I also have the drivers you linked installed already, and cannot get the discrete graphics card to function in 3D applications.

Thanks

Already tried that on each desired application, still no luck... I cannot get the darn thing to work. My laptop will recognize it's there.

I am wondering if the Optimus drivers just don't work well with Windows 8 yet or I have a more serious problem?

Tried all the drivers on the Lenovo website, those don't help. The ones on the specific website definitely don't work either.

Maybe this computer is malfunctioning seems no one else has run into this problem with Windows 8.

New Nvidia drivers that came out over the weekend don't work obviously. Rolled back to the ones on the Lenovo site but still can only use the Intel HD graphic.

Unless anyone has any other ideas, I guess I will look into getting a different laptop I can't be sure that a new one would even work as I tend to think its a Windows 8 issue.

Hi neokenchi,

I just wanted to let you know your explanation and support tools helped me perfectly. I was confused as to why my 3d applications and games were not allowing me to select the nvidia card, only intel, but then when running your tools I see that the nvidia card is switching on and being used.

It all makes sense now, thanks again!
