Ideapad Z710 thermal throttling

I purchased my Z710 Laptop 2-3 years ago. Currently I seem to suffer from thermal throttling on both the CPU(i7-4700mq)(85C) and GPU(gt-745m)(75C). I tried cleaning dust from the fan and heatsink but that did not seem to solve the issue. I tried to underclock CPU down to 2.4GHz but still reaches 85C and GPU still throttles as well.

So I am thinking of two options:

1) Buy a laptop cooling pad and put it under the exposed underside of the laptop and hope that it can cool it down.

2)Replace the thermal paste of the CPU and GPU (boy oh boy how sketchy this one is, but exciting at the same time!) and hope for the best?

I am looking for your advice on which of these I should choose or if there is anything I am missing?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Ideapad Z710 thermal throttling

Hi there, Big3moke -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

You might be in power saving mode. Open Control Panel, and click on Hardware & Sound. From there, click on 'Power Options'. You might have to click 'show additional plans. From there, select High performance.

Also from there, click on 'change plan settings', then 'change advanced power settings'. Scroll to 'Processor power management, and expand 'Maximum processor state'. Change this to 100% each for better performance.

Of course, improving cooling would also drastically improve performance, so you might want to open it up and blow out the dust; maybe change thermal paste.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Ideapad Z710 thermal throttling

I wish it was the power plan but it is not however Smiley Sad
I am trying out a cooling pad for now but if that does not work I might have to change the thermal paste later on. Thank you for replying. BTW is this a good paste?

Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme

Thermal Conductivity

8.5 W/(m*K)

CPU Water Cooling, High Pressure

31.8 ΔT (22 °C ambient)

CPU Air Cooling, High Pressure

35.3 ΔT (22 °C ambient)

CPU Air Cooling, Low Pressure

36.7 ΔT (22 °C ambient)

GPU Cooling

65.0 ΔT (22 °C ambient)

Electrically Conductive

No

Viscosity

6 (1-10, lower numbers mean easier to use)

Ease of Use

5 (1-10, higher numbers mean easier to use)

Application Hints

The paste can be spread more easily if you warm it to 100-120 degrees Fahrenheit in a pot of water, sealed in a water-tight pouch.

GC-Extreme is the best thermal paste, maintaining a slim lead over the runner-up as long as you're using a heat sink with high mounting pressure. Heating it up a bit does pay off though, and we recommend it for overclockers and enthusiasts. Due to its high viscosity, it's perhaps less ideal for beginners.

Re: Ideapad Z710 thermal throttling

Got a cooling pad, stripped off the bottom cover. Not throttling but is at the border with CPU reaching 85C and GPU 75C.

Secondly, I tried to apply thermal paste but CPU/GPU were screwed really tight so I did not bother and put anymore pressure on mobo so I just ended it there.
