I first get the lenovo page with the swirling balls, the the screen goes to black with more swirling balls. Sorry I am not very techie and have idea idea what to do. I have tried shutting off and restarting... nothing.  I have tried letting it run and nothing after several hours.

Re: Ideapad z510 won't boot after update

Thanks before I try this I want to make sure this isn't some kind of a factory reboot that will bring my system back to zero and I will lose everything.

A power drain is where you unplug the AC adapter and the battery, then hold down the power button to get rid of excess power that's built up in the hardware. By doing this, no files or data loss will happen.

Re: Ideapad z510 won't boot after update

Ok I still need to try this. One more question. My battery is dead and I have just been using my power cord. Will this work if I don't have a battery and just use my cord or should I buy one first ?

Re: Ideapad z510 won't boot after update

Chances are it'll work without a battery, but if you're using a less than adequate power supply, the machine might throttle the CPU because it can't supplement with power from a battery.

You can run it without battery if you like, however if you have the 65 watt adapter, then your system performance will be affected. If you have the 90 watt adapter then that is okay.

However, without battery, you may lose all your work when the power cuts out due to:

1. Accidental unplugging of the power plug.
2. Brownouts (which momentarily flutations in power supplied through main.
3. Or total blackout.
