Re: Installing SSD in Y560p

There is no blacklist so any mSATA card will work fine. Of course there is the chance the card may have problems, so make sure you can return a defective card.

Re: Installing Mini PCIE SSD y560

So I picked up one of the 128GB MyDigitalSSD mSATA SSD connected to slot 5 but I can't find the drive to format it or install anything on it, What is the trick?

Re: Installing Mini PCIE SSD y560

If the drive is uninitialized (which is the case for any new drive that has not been formatted at all), then it will not appear in Windows Explorer as it has no partitions. In Windows you go to Disk Management to intialize a disk, partition it, and create a new volume.

http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/29199-hard-drive-initialization-question.html

This thread has a nice little guide to how to intialize a drive (second post).

You want to choose MBR. You can use GPT as a data disk, but you can't boot off of it (future computers will. It's a bit too advanced for our measly technology).

This is done everytime you connect a fresh drive to a WIndows computer, so you might want to remember this for whenever you buy new drives (HDD or SSD).

If it doesn't show up in Disk Management then it's probably an incompatible/defective piece. In that case return it and go get a new/different one. The Intel 310 is going to work for sure, and there are several good ones out there as the tech has matured. Try newegg:

This is what I was looking for.  I had gone to the Disk Management but there was nothing showing up so I wasn't sure if I had to toggle something else on somewhere else.  Does the devices need to be in a specific boot order in the y560 bios or anything?

Thanks for the help, my first attempt with the SSD's....

Re: Installing Mini PCIE SSD y560

We haven't tried them but if it says msata then it is very likely to work. Pick the one with the best iops or 4kb random access speed. Make sue you can return it if it is incompatible or defective. Also try to avoid reviving dead threads Smiley Tongue

Re: Installing Mini PCIE SSD y560

Hi,

Can I add a mPCIE ssd and use it for windows only? Without creating the rapid drive?

Or it's better to create a rapiddrive.

Thank you !

Re: Installing Mini PCIE SSD y560

If you have a large (>32GB) and good quality (mostly intel) mSATA ( NOT mPCIE. The two only share the same plug, but have different wiring)., then put the entire operating system on it. Rapiddrive has software overhead and it's simpler and thus faster to have windows on the SSD and data files on the hard drive.
