Internal speakers not working, only left headphone works

Hi All,

I've only had this laptop (Lenovo Z50-70, Windows 8.1) since December and now the internal speakers don't work at all. The sound only works through left headphone.

I've tested the sound with multiple head/earphones but sound only comes out from the left ear.

The volume control reads "speakers" regardless of whether my headphones are plugged in or not.

The problem occurs regardless of program/browser used.

I have uninstalled the driver (Conexant Smart Audio HD) through device manager, through programs and features and reinstalled from Lenovo's website.

I have searched for updates through the device manager.

Rolled back and updated through the drivers properties. I've refreshed my Laptop and tried it all again and updated my laptop through Windows Update but nothings changed.

Re: Internal speakers not working, only left headphone works

hi waterwhale,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

We have seen concern about the seperate Smart Audio software with the conexant device

Can you check these threads and see if the Smart Audio (seperate app) is causing this issue

Re: Internal speakers not working, only left headphone works

Thanks for the response.

I tried the first link but the only option I can see under the "enhancements tab" is "disable all sound effects." I went onto "smart audio" as suggested towards the end but playing around with the equaliser didn't work.

Link 2: The levels were already up all the way. This version of SmartAudio doesn't have a "voice enhancements" tab.

Link 3: I played around with the audio director and here's what I found:

  • I can only see the "speakers" option in the playback tab (after right clicking on the "speakers" icon)
  • Headphones plugged in - sound only from the left headphone.
  • Headphones out - no sound from internal speakers

I can now see a speakers and headphones option in the playback tab. The speakers read "default device", the headphones read "default communications device" and remains that way regardless of whether I put in or take out my headphones.

Using the smart audio test, the left and right internal speakers work. But during the headphones test, I can still only hear the left headphone. I tested the sound with a music player and a browser but the sound only came out of the laptop speakers even when my headphones where plugged in.

Re: Internal speakers not working, only left headphone works

I had the exact same problem. I solved the internal speakers problem with the multistream.

I solved the left headphones problem with not pushing the plug all the way in. Unusual, but it works. Halfway in, then both sides of headphones work.

So internal speakers: software problem. Headphones: hardware problem.

I have the exact same issue. Did you ever find a fix?

Re: Internal speakers not working, only left headphone works

Computer tech here.  Same problem with a Z50-70 laptop that was given to me where I replaced the screen, bezel and palmrest.  Pushing in halfway as suggested does give sound out of both sides of headphones but it is only the left channel combined.  The right channel is still missing.

Some have suggested updating the BIOS.  Sorry... if the BIOS upgrade is as well-engineered as this sound system is, I dare not risk bricking the system board trying to get right-side audio from headphones.

Switching between left headphone and speakers must be done manually above the volume slider.  Switching between onboard and earbud mic requires opening the SmartAudio UI.

Ridiculous.  This is supposed to be automatic.

Here's my fix.  Live with left side only headphone audio (mic works) but I will NOT be purchasing a Lenovo ever and I will recommend to others to NOT purchase a Lenovo.
