So I've been trying to figure it out, but this is my first laptop, I've done some looking around on the forums and found some unrelated issues regarding the dual graphics cards (Most people not realizing they had the option for one or the other) and this is not that.
My issue is I do indeed have both graphics cards, but only one seems to work until I plug in the battery charger. I'm a gamer, and that is why I bought this laptop, I work out of town a lot and needed something short of lugging around my desktop everywhere I went. So when I found this gem, I was super excited, and it works well. Except for the fact I have to keep the laptop plugged in at all times in order to run the second video card, I've looked under slews of options within the control panel and power saving features but nothing seems to stand out to me to indicate there is any way to play with the settings for this particular problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome to the Forums.
Your issue might be similar to this thread.
In running SLI, the unit requires a 170w power, otherwise it will only use 1 GPU as stated in this article. Also, the Ideapad Y500 is powered by a Lithium Ion 6-cell, 72Wh battery. If you're on battery power, running a dual GT 650m alone consumes a total of 90W and the unit still needs to power up the cpu, hdd, lcd, etc. so the system automatically disables SLI and underclock the GPU (and possibly the CPU) to give way to other PC components
