Lenovo P580 – should I update to 8.1 or stay at 8.0?

2020-02-08, 15:20 PM

Hello!

First of all, I'm aware that this model is... quite old, so to speak. Back in the day, I remember there was a certain lack of drivers for the 8.1, thus I'd avoided updating. Now, it seems like there's just about the same amount of drivers avalaible for 8.1 as for the 8.0.

So, the question is – should I update to 8.1? Mind you, I'm more concerned about overall performance, rather than new feauteres and such.

ALWAYS MAKE A FULL BACKUP BEFORE UPGRADING OPERATING SYSTEMS.

I think that 8.1 is simply better than 8.0 and has similar support, so I would say yes.

If it were mine, I would, instead, try windows 10.  Although it is not being advertised, it seems Microsoft is not charging for upgrades to windows 10 on machines with windows 7 or 8 licenses in the BIOS, as long as you put on the correct edition (like Pro -> Pro). You can download windows 10 on a USB key here:

Well, I understand that 8.1 is quite close to 8.0 in terms of compatibility, but I would want someone who still uses (or has used) the very same laptop model (however unlikely that would be, especially now), to confirm if there would be any perfomance issues.

As for the Windows 10, I simply can't trust it to run smoothly on this laptop on system-built drivers alone – there are official drivers only for Windows 7/8.0/8.1.
