Lenovo Y50-70 Fps drop in game

Hi everyone,

Since 4 months, my laptop doesn't work.In fact, I always have a FPS drop while I'm playing(for example : Cs:Go, Day of defeat : source , Guild Wars 2....).

At the beginning , the game is very fluid (at 60 Fps or more..).After 1 or 2 minutes the computer struggle and I fall at 15 FPS or less.

I tried to : - check if I'm on Nvidia's graphic card when I play, but it's ok.

                   -All my drivers are updated.

                  - check computer's temperature, but even in game , it doesn't increase (45-55°).

-play with the NVIDIA optimal recommendation video setting or less. (High).

That's my Lenovo Y50-70's configuration :

Intel Core i5 4200H Cadencé à 2.80 GHz
Nvidia Gtx 860m
8 Go de RAM
Windows 8.1 (x64)

If you want more information , don't hesitate,

Thanks for help .

Re: Lenovo Y50-70 Fps drop in game

Because you're not using Windows 10 doesn't mean you will not get some error. In fact, most error in Windows 8/8.1 is fixed in Windows 10. So, for beginner. I'd recommanded you too check these...

- Check if you've 'Fast Start-up' trun on. I'd recommanded you disable them. Most people had Graphic card related problem because of this function.

- Check if your power option is on 'Power saver' or not. Sometime they forget to changed back...

- Check if your Intel GPU driver is up-to-date or not. It is directly related to Nvidia card. Some people think it is not related and not mention it. Also, as 'Up-to-date' I really mean it. I think it had 3 version that 'Up-to-date' in the internet right now. But I recommanded you using driver from Lenovo website.

If those above doesn't work... Well... You can try reset BIOS setting to defalut. But I think your problem is rather similar to this thread ... "https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Y50-70-Nvidia-GTX-960M-low-GPU-frequency-after-..."

For now, I'd like you to 'Restart' **not shut down and trun on** of the system and see if the problem solve. If it solve then the problem is 'Fast start-up' for sure.

Re: Lenovo Y50-70 Fps drop in game

Addition to Dylans,

Make sure the heatsink is on tight, that CPU might actually be overheating.

Your CPU / GPU might be overheating and it's throttling down which may explain the FPS drop during games - this would cause your CPU / GPU to operate in a low frequency. Try to monitor your CPU by using CoreTemp and your GPU by using GPU Shark or Afterburner.

If you get high temperatures, you can try to decrease the heat by:

  1. Using a good quality cooling pad that runs on high RPM or a better cooling in your room.
  2. Replacing the stock Thermal Interface Material with a good quality TIM like Noctua NT-H1Tuniq TX-4, or Artic Silver 5.

Also, run a few tests from this link -

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/lenovodiagnosticsolutions/tools

You should try Storage test, memory test, motherboard test, CPU test. Open Command prompt and try sfc /scannow to check if your windows files are corrupted.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo Y50-70 Fps drop in game

After few tests I come back to you with bad news.

-I up to date the Bios/intel card etc... with Lenovo Web site

-I have stopped the fast start up , but nothing has changed.

I've downloaded Afterburner , and I've seen that Gpu is only used at 45-55 %(didn't stop to fluctuate very low to 45-55) in game and the temperature stay at 45° for 15-20 minutes of game.

The Fps are at 60/52 in beginning before to drop down at 9.2 or less in the worst moment.

I am on windows 8.1 because I had windows error with W10.

Re: Lenovo Y50-70 Fps drop in game

It is pretty obvious but I'll say it anyway. In case you didn't do it. But after disable Fast startup you should restart your laptop before it can take effect. Well, it's not like I didn't think you didn't do it. But because I didn't say it in the last reply so... sometime... people can be very straightforward... Forgive me if you already did it...

Back to the topic.. I didn't use afterburner to measure my GPU load but I use Nvidia inspector. And I learn that GPU load only show how much it work at that state... I mean.. Power state... Since Nvidia inspector show power state, I can pretty much see how it climb up each power state in each power setting in Nvidia Control panel.

As you say that temp stay the same mean no claim up in power state. GPU load at 45-55% mean it cannot climb up to higher power state. It is just my observation but after the GPU hit about 50% the power state change to higher one at higher frequency. This is my assumption but I think it has to do with power setting in Nvidia Control Panel Profiles setting. Sometime after driver installation the Power Management Mode will be set to 'Optimal Power' which lower the frequency to deliver longer game play (on battery, it is bottleneck when plugged-in). But your setting should be 'Adeptive', both in global profiles and program profiles.

But if you not using it on battery, you can set it to 'Prefer maximun performance' which gave Nvidia card High voltage and High frequency all the time when applications in the setting are running.

Re: Lenovo Y50-70 Fps drop in game

Hi,

I've tried everything but nothing change.

Even if I 've restarted the computed after disabled fast startup ,I've tested it again but I always have this drop of FPS.

Moreover, I've tried to make : Max Performance in Nvidia/Powerstate Option.
