Lenovo Y50-70 : Should I install DDR3 or DDR3L RAM?

2016-04-15, 4:19 AM

I found out there is some conflicting information about the type of ram for Lenevo Y50-70 (more specsific my model is Lenovo Y50-70 [59418017] ). Some website/forum said that it use DDR3 and some said it use DDR3L.

** Click here this image not clear

So my question is which type should I buy? DDR3 or DDR3L? or I can use both?

Thank You

Hi LV7 ,

Greetings .

You should get a DDR3L as per the your models product specifications :

16GB max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, non-parity, dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets

OEM recommended parts all DDR3L based from the hardware manual FRU listing (item 11 , page 91)

scanners would be basing it on other device specification like CPU and chipset only but again compatibility on its overall performance and BIOS would be a usual issue. it woul either boot with IRQ errors or just beeps on you .

You may check your installed RAM physically and read the label , as sample processor i5-4200H Processor also show Memory Types DDR3L 1333/1600 .

Hope this answered your query .

Update us .

Regards

You cannot use both. I agree with Spidey's post that most laptops should be using DDR3L but the information you posted is ambiguous.

Best way is to open the laptop and check what is installed.

From your screenshots, I think your RAM should look like this -

First of all, Thank for reply,

Yes, I'll check my laptop, the image that you gave me ( above ) is how my RAM look like.

So, now do you mean I have to change the both RAM ( my current RAM in my laptop and the one that I will buy) to DDR3L sodimm? can you recommended me what brand/type that that fits my laptop?

I had to double check it becuase I don't want to mistakenly buy it ..........

Thank You

Re: Lenovo Y50-70 : Should I install DDR3 or DDR3L RAM?

I found Kingstone KVR16LS11 RAM 8GB DRR3L, review says it good for Y50. I bought it, install in Y50 and YES, it works perfect on Y50. It works perfect with with my current RAM ( Slot 1; Samsung 8GB DRR3 M471B1G73DB0-YK0 | Slot 2 ; Kingstone KVR16LS11 RAM 8GB DRR3L  ).  Choosing between Drr3 or drr3l actually is based on your system, like what was said here ;

What is the difference between DDR3 and DDR3L SD RAM? from quara

  1. The difference between these two RAMs is nothing but the voltage consumption. The DDR3L RAM consumes lesser voltage compared to the DDR3. This reduces heating and enables faster operation.
  2. Also the lower the operating voltage, (1.35v, 1.25v) the faster the memory can theoretically operate because the transition from a zero to a one state requires less voltage shift. It takes less time to go from zero to 1.25 v than it does to go from zero to 1.5v. So the memory cell comes ready sooner.
  3. The DDR3L RAMs will be compatible only on latest 3rd generation processors

So, RAM spec for Y50 is; 1600MHz, PC3-12800, 1600mhz ,11-11-11-28, 1.35V, 204-Pin ,Unbuffered, SODIMM.

Any RAM who have above spec is suitable for Y50 and mixed brand is okay ( example: slot 1; Adata | Slot 2; Crucial ). Here are some other brand that work well for Y50;

  • Crucial - CT102464BF160B
  • Corsair - CMSO8GX3M1C1600C11
  • Adata - AD3S1600W8G11-S
  • Acer - KN.8GB0G.013, KN.8GB0G.015, NP.DDR11.00M
  • Dell - A6994446, A7022339, JNDC8, SNP66GKYC/8G
  • Fujitsu - FPCEM899AP, FPCEM940AP, FPCEM944AP, S26391-F1332-L800
    HP Inc. - 693374-001, H6Y77AA, H6Y77AA#ABA, H6Y77AA#ABF, H6Y77AA#ABH, H6Y77AA#ABU, H6Y77AA#AC3, H6Y77AA#UUZ, H6Y77ET, H6Y77ET#AC3, H6Y77UT, H6Y77UT#ABA
  • Lenovo - 03T7118, 03X6657, 0B47381, 888016722, GX70J36384, GX70K42907
  • Panasonic - CF-WMBA1308G
  • Samsung - M471B1G73BH0-CK000, M471B1G73EB0-YK0, M471B1G73QH0-YK0, M471B1G73QH0-YK000
  • Toshiba - PA5104U-1M8G

Hope this help all Y50 user out there to choose RAM for their Y50. Thank You.

Hi you can install any type of PC3-12800 204pin SODIMM DDR3 or DDR3L RAM in y50 no problems..... But to get most of the perfomance go for kingston HyperX Impact DDR3L memory 1600Mhz with C9 tight timings(9-9-9-24 CAS Latency) lesser these nos lesser the latency greater the performance....... To get best dual channel setup go for identical memory with identical timings and clocks.... :)

Hi LV7 ,

Greetings.

Great that it worked for you .

Mixed RAM as some would conveniently work at some time .

Manufacturers of RAM would refer still to OEM for best recommendation as indicated on their disclaimer.

As per the original query , it is advise to follow the hardware manual of the OEM. Brnads may differ but at least the specifications should be consistent.

Goodluck to your endeavors.

Regards
