Lenovo Y50 screen fading to white and black with multicolored lines

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I'm looking for help diagnosing the problem with my lenovo y50. I have had it for nearly 3 years now and it has been pretty great for the most part. However, recently the screen started acting  up and going white or black and displaying multicolored lines on screen (I will attach pictures). I looked online for solution including this forum and updated the bios and tried disconnecting the screen connector and making sure it was connected well behind the screen. Ultimately none of this worked and so I am considering replacingthe screen and the edp flat cable. I just wanted to see ifI'm correct in assuming these may be the problem as I even connected the laptop to an external monitor and it worked fine therewith no lines. I will say moving the screen around does help make it visible again. Anyway thanks.20170711_202607_HDR-min.jpg20170711_202612_HDR-min.jpg20170711_202614_HDR-min.jpg20170711_202616_HDR-min.jpg20170711_202627_HDR-min.jpg

Re: Lenovo Y50 screen fading to white and black with multicolored lines

Hello AosTheory

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

By the sounds of things, this will be an issue with the cable connection between the unit and the display.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.

(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)
1. Turn the unit off
2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter
3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds
4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter
5. Turn the unit on as normal
.

If these steps do not work I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line for a possible service. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community AosTheory !

I agree with Krakken.  From what you have described I would suspect the issue is with the video cable, especially if the problem clears by moving the lid.   Since it also sounds like you have tried reseating the video cable on both the motherboard and screen, if so,  the next step would be to just replace the cable.  Over time video cables can develop breaks in the wires in the area of the hinge where it frequently flexes.  Try a new cable before investing in a screen replacement.

Okay thanks I'll try that. Any advice on where to get a new cable if needed?

Re: Lenovo Y50 screen fading to white and black with multicolored lines

Not quite sure which Y50 model you have.  The Hardware Maintenance Manual for the Y50 lists several video cable part numbers depending on the type of display and model.  Those part listings start on page #92 of the manual which can be found at this link....

https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_y40_50_series_hmm.pdf

Your current video cable should also have a tag on it with the part number.

Once you know the part number trying doing a search at Encompass for availability...

https://lenovo.encompass.com/

You can also do a search on the Internet using the part number.  Sites like eBay and Amazon frequently offer new and used parts for older computer models.
