Lenovo Y500 RAM issues

2015-07-27, 14:10 PM
Hi,
I have a two year old Y500, dual booting Linux and Windows 8. Not under warranty.

Here's the problem I'm facing.
The laptop was very slow to boot the last week, probably because it went to sleep and was taking time loading the saved RAM image.

But now, it stopped starting up altogether. When I press the power button, the CPU fan starts running, I can hear the HDD spinning as well. I can also change the back lit light brightness of the keyboard. But no display. Pressing caps lock or num lock doesn't toggle the indicator. Most importantly, when I connect or remove the power supply, I can hear a beep from the speakers. Just one single beep.
Checking online, many forums suggest that this could be a RAM failure or a motherboard failure. So, I took the RAM out, put it in the other port, still the same. I also tried rubbing the metal contacts with an eraser and trying, still no change

How can I be sure this is a RAM failure? If yes, which RAM should I get?

If you have another laptop, you can try swapping the RAM and seeing if that fixes the problem.

If it does, Corsair and GSkill make good gaming RAM. I'm not sure what CPU you have but I'll assume it can handle 1600MHz :P. If that's the case I'd personally recommend Corsair Vengeance which you can get either 8GB or 16GB of (starting at $52). It has good CAS latency, 9-9-9-24, a tiny bit lower than the GSkill.

How sure are you about the RAM failure?

Also, what's the form factor I'm looking at? number of pins .etc

Thanks

I'd test it to make sure it's the RAM before buying new stuff if you can. The specs for the RAM would be PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz SODIMM form factor.

I believe it should be fine. If you already have another stick lying around though I'd try that first to check if the RAM is the issue.

Unfortunetly no :(

Checked the corsair site, they say it has a SPD speed of 1333MHz and a tested of 1600MHz.

Should I set up the RAM to work at 1600MHz myself?

I think it auto-overclocks itself, but just to make sure you can check what the speed is in the task manager. If it doesn't, you should be able to go into the BIOS and change it, but I'd just check first and possibly save yourself some trouble.
